computer makes siren type noise and shuts down computer

Postby polokid69 » Wed Jul 19, 2006 11:30 pm

I have the same problem with my PC. It will make this siren sound like that of a european police siren, high and low tone. It does this and then shuts down the computer. You then have to unplug and reconnect the power cord before it will reboot. I recently installed a TV video card and thought maybe that was it but removing it did not fix the problem. I also installed a agp video card but don't believe this is the cause either. I did recently install WIN DVD, a program for the TV card, I'm wondering if this could anyway cause the issue. It happened again a little while ago. I pulled the cover with it still making the noise to see if I could find what is making the noise but could not be for sure. I do not believe it is the fan for the cpu or the fans on the power supply or the fan on the video card. Anyone have any ideas ?

nah, the beep codes usually mean something hardware related is busted.

If the operating system could get in there an intercept it to give you a more friendly message then it would. Also the fact that you can't reboot is a sure fire sign.

You could *try* removing all the cards & cables and then re-seating them (put them back in) one by one, just in case there is a connection issue there somewhere.

You should back up your data too. But then you should always back up your data :) dvd writers go from about 20 quid and tesco does rewritable dvds in spindles of 25 for about 12.50.. So you'll get no sympathy from me if you lose anything :)
