Can I work for you?
Nose pressed hard on frosted glass
Gazing as the swollen mass
On concrete fields where grows no grass
He stumbles blindly on
Iron trees smother the air
Withering they stand and stare
Through eyes that neither know nor care
Where the grass is gone

Has anyone seen the film 'John Q'?

A little boy needs a heart transplant. The father thinks he's covered, but the terms of his insurance are changed, so he's charged $250,000 in cash.

Could this really happen in america?

Not that accuracy matters in this kind of discussion, but the funny thing is, we already have universal health coverage here in the US. Hospitals will give you treatment regardless of your ability to pay, it's the law.

The debate is actually about universal health *insurance* for preventative care.

Once again, people with experience and information on an issue are the vast minority, so by far most people expressing an opinion on a topic are inexperienced and uninformed. Now we certainly want everyone to have their opinion heard, so that means that means lots of folks repeating, "America should have heath care for all" even tho America already does!

Politics is a blast! 2 people who are wrong will out vote the one who knows the issue almost every time. Ya gotta love it.

You're saying that there'd be no issue with a person without insurance getting an organ transplant then?

Actually, just like in every other system, there is a chance he would get the transplant, and a chance he would be refused it. Entirely dependent on the actual facts of the case.

Most of the time, for a child in that situation, the money will be found. There are lots of charities, etc. Depending on the child's chances of surviving, long term. That's why you don't really see those stories for real . . . movies are about telling a good story. If the truth gets in the way of the good story, then the truth gets left out.

You could just as easily make a movie about a state-run system like in Britain where some mid-level govt worker refused to allow such an operation, as I understand it.

The truth is, the idea of universal health insurance is one of corruption. Politicians saying, "Vote for me and I'll give you free stuff".

Democratic elections are good and bad. They allow for anyone to have access to the reigns of power, if they can convince enough people to give them a chance. That's good.

But they also allow an amazing amount of corruption. Politicians promise to take money at gunpoint and give it to folks free, if you vote for them.

Govt is suppose to be about 'infrastructure'. Not paying people for votes with public funds. Of course corruption works, so we'll always have it . . . but it's always going to be a battle between those of us who want honest govt and those who just want freebies.

The two questions don't add up, how can you compare two totally different things, you can only compare like with like.

Children and adults are two entirely different case's.

Hey Fred, What type of business do you have? What kind of benefits do you offer your employees? Have you ever considered making your basement livable and renting it out, or making other tax friendly use of it? I noticed your comment earlier telling someone to get out of their momma's basement and get a job. Have you ever considered how much space goes to waste in a basement? Most apartments are smaller than the typical basement. When I got my first job and moved out of the nest, I rented into a place with a bunch of others my age, mixed gender. I willingly took the basement. It had its own full bath, and 1100 sq ft of space. I painted it, cleaned it up, put up a dart board and a space heater which I tapped the direct gas line. So the entire house got the benefit of the heater, as heat rises, and I had the biggest master suite I have ever seen! Put that basement to good use, buddy!

Well, half-truths are better that whole truths, aren’t they dudeski? If you go to a hospital emergency ward, it’s true that in the US they can’t turn you away. But it’s also true that they will bill your and dun your credit report for everything that you didn’t pay for. Furthermore, you can’t exist on emergency care forever.

You call that universal health care? It’s also true that any visit you schedule with your doctor in anticipation of any problem is uncompensated. So much for preventative health care.

Some questions to (some of..) the Americans here, especially Fredski:

* Why does a day's stay in a USA hospital cost up to 4 or 5 times as much as in an equivalent Aussie hospital?
Were THAT good.

* Why should the all-up total costs of an essential operation be double in an American hospital, when compared to the same surgery being carried out in an equivalent standard Australian hospital?
Because the hospitals have to pass on the costs of "free" health care to those that can pay! Nothing is free you see.

* Why should Americans be so happy to see their health funds making 40 - 50% profit margins on turnover, while at the same time cutting back on the cover provided to their members?
The members can leave if they like. It's a free country.

* Why would Americans be happy to see billions of taxpayers' dollars being given to health funds and private hospitals - when they are supposed to be "private" business?
Seems like double dipping to me...
Socialized medicine will make wars look cheap.
