to answer the question of whether evangelism (or evangelicism if you liketo use that word instead) is the same as fascism, you would first have to look at what the two terms mean.
what is fascism?
fascism is as a movement of extreme racial or cultural nationalism, combined with economic corporatism and authoritarian autocracy. the . political movement is led by a strong charismatic leader whose reactionary ideas are said to express the will of the masses.
fascism and nazism (a specific form of fascism) involve:
- nationalism;
- aggressive militarism;
- violence or threats of violence to impose views on others;
- authoritarian reliance on a leader or elite not responsible to the electorate.
- attacks on both liberalism and communism.
- dehumanization and scapegoating of enemies as inferior or subhuman;
- the self image of being superior to socialism, capitalism and democracy.
- exploitation of the industrial working class and;
- abandonment of any consistent ideology in a drive for power.
what is evangelism?
basically, evangelism is the practice of preaching the gospel of Jesus to both Christians and non-Christians, with the aim of converting the listeners to the evangelists brand of Christianity. some evangelists lead large meetings like those of billy graham, while others address the public in street corner preaching in small groups or even on a one to one basis. those who operate as missionaries these days lay themselves open to claims of cultural imperialism. then there are the tv evangelists who have proved to be prone to scandal.
are they the same thing?
as a generalisation, no, certainly in the case of the more mainstream evangelists. but while fascism is fairly constant in its methods, evangelism is not. there are some pretty strange evangelists out there and some of them would employ . ideology to a degree. some evangelists who have extreme views that diverge greatly from those of the mainstream churches (some to the extent that they may even be considered cult leaders) could be said to operate in a very similar method to fascists (think of the jonestown massacre in guyana for example) but these evangelists are a very small minority."
