Even first cousins are legally and morally OK. Third cousins are so far removed there is hardly any blood link at all, and for many people they may not even know they are related, so this is really only an issue with close family.

Remember, third cousins mean you share one great-great grandparent (who in my case died in the mid 1800s). and only 1/16 of your potential genes are common, much less in reality. You probably share more with your neighbour. When it comes to the social side, how many families have any sort of ties to third cousins. I know who some of mine are by name, but I certainly haven't met any, and wouldn't know how to.

I find this question "How can some be attracted to his/her own sibling?" to be wrong. Human mind is just attracted to opposite sex, that is all. There is no internal programming to stop your arousal when it is your sibling. It is how you are brought up.. what you learnt which is hindering you saying "Oh nooo this is your brother/sister" What if you never knew it is your brother/sister. You would be attracted naturally. So if for someone the learnt impulse of "oh no this is my brother/sister" is not strong enough, it is perfectly natural to be attracted to brother/sister. It is nothing to be ashamed about. How we handle it only matters.

Oh come on. I know what you're saying, but we also don't have "internal programming" to stop us from murdering someone who pisses us off, or to stop us from raping someone, or to stop us from sexually violating children, etc...there's right, and there's wrong. You've gotta be nuts to get sexually arroused by your own family member. And it is something to be ashamed of. Unless you were raised your whole life in a bomb shelter with a bunch of pervs and grew up thinking it was ok to have sex with whomever you desired, there's no excuse for such thinking, or leniency about it.

I read once that the reason we don't find our siblins attractive is because they look so much like us and this signals to us that our genes would not be suited in mating. I could never imagine being attracted to my brother

We were involved off and on for almost 3 years. It ended when I moved out of state. That was almost 20 years ago and nothing has happened between us since.

x-xcutiex-x, there may be something in what you say. But usually many siblings dont know they have a resemblance in looks. Only those outside the family can see it clearly. Anyways there can be some subconscious part of brain behind it. Also we would have grown up seeing each other naked and when we first hear about sex which usually happens before we mature our first thoughts would be usually a combination of disgust and curiosity. These things may have some effect I think. But it is definitely not the same for everyone. I too cant imagine at all getting attracted to a close relative but I definitely can see the point of view of others. It is ultimately a male body with a male brain and a female body with a female brain. They can get attracted to each other. I get attracted to many weird things which others find odd. We are all different.

There are also theories that we're more attracted to those who look LIKE we do, so that's not as simple as it sounds.

I think the truth is, there's no "natural" rule here about why people do, or do not, have the desire to have sex with their siblings.
In spite of the extreme societal taboo that exists, it still happens A LOT!

I think at some point thousands of years ago, someone probably wised up to the fact that it causes deformities, and that's how it got introduced into civilized cultures that you're not supposed to do it.
The reality is, it takes a while to screw up the gene pool.
It's a myth that for instance, if brothers and sisters mate, their kid will be deformed or retarded. It usually takes a couple generations of this to cause severe problems like that.
Still a very bad idea though.

me and my brother used to play with each other untill one day we ended up having sex. we stopped at that point and have never done anything or spoke about it since (now both married with kids).

I don't regret doing it, however I am pleased it made us stop.
