Ever used a pair of Black 60 denier opaque tights as a replacement fan belt..?

I remember my mother taking her tights off for my father to use as an improvised fan belt when I was about 8. Don't think they were 60 denier black opaque, however.

I've never had a fan belt go on one of my own cars, so never needed to resort to that sort of improvisation myself.

It is possible to do this with older cars, like my 1968 Triumph, but modern engines tend to run all sorts of things via one belt and they are often under quite a lot of tension so I dobt that it would work.
My advice to any men reading this is, if you want to get a girls tights off use a proper chat up line or an old car.

Never tried it with that exact type but I did try it once many years ago.
They don't work.
As a chat up line, it may be more sucessfull though.

i have my doubts as to whether this would work at all, but if it does i agree that it would be most likely to only work on a car that is at least thirty years old. things are so complex under the bonnet of a modern day car that you probably couldn't even find where the belt was supposed to be anyway.

let's just say that, if i'm in a car that breaks down in this manner, i'm not about to start taking off my tights.

btw - what sort of triumph is it? a 2000 or 2500 or something sporty like a stag or spitfire?

I read soemwhere that they only ever made about 17,000 Stags.

(My primary school headmaster had one of them, and a SWB Landy. He was pretty cool ... for a headmaster.)

...and i think every one of them overheated because Triumph fitted a Radiator that was to small for the engine......
I had an art teacher who had a Datsun 240 Z or 260 Z back in ,77.....

i thought that figure looked a bit low, so i did a bit of googling and it seems the correct figure is around 25,900. someone up the road from me has a nice white one.

nice - you don't see many of the earlier ones out here, although there are quite a few mark II's still running around (although a fair few of them are 2500's)

Our Headmaster's secretary had a Stag brand new purple .It had a problem of the battery going flat caused by the boot light staying on when the boot was closed ,took the dealer a lot of trips back and battery boosts to get it sorted

this happened to me a couple of years ago. after recharging the battery on a number of occasions, i thought there was probably something wrong with the charging system (i knew the battery was ok), so i took the car to an auto electrician. when he told me it was working properly i asked him what he thought might be causing the trouble. he was convinced that i was forgetting to turn the lights off but when i told him i definitely was not, especially that number of times, he paused and thought (it appeared to be a painful experience for him) and said maybe the boot light was staying on and - guess what - it was. for some strange reason the boot lid had moved a bit out of position (no, i hadn't had an accident) and wasn't pushing the switch far enough. the bolts that held the lid in place were so tight that i couldn't undo them to fix it, so i just took the bulb out.
