I am having a gastric balloon fitted on Saturday through The Hospital Group, just wondered if anyone has any advice or success stories. :P

My sister had one fitted at a Leeds Hospital, I'm afraid it hasn't worked.

She is still 23 stone. :(

hi ive had the gastric ballon inserted last yr in june 08 - dont waste your money it hasnt really worked, ive spent £3500... i really thought this would work & it would stop me feeling hungry, & some how i would be able to take some control back... altogether ive lost only 11lbs...

firstly it took me over 2 weeks to get over the procedure, i was vomiting & couldnt move for over a week... secondly after i got over the worst (which lasted for over 3wks) i still felt hungry it didnt make me feel full up... my stomach is just more bloated!!!!!!!

i just dont want anyone else to waste their money like i have, i feel like such a failure...!!

Hi all, I had the balloon fitted 6 weeks ago and the procedure itself was really unpleasant! I put weight on the first 2 weeks even though I was constantly vomiting and unable to get out of bed. It cost me £4000 and although I am eating less (about half the amount I used to), I have not lost any weight. It does make you feel like a complete failure and I spend most of my time crying. Please dont waste your money!! :(

Everything I've read about says that just putting the balloon in and expecting it to be a magic cure just doesn't work. reputable clinics back it up with a year of psychological & dietician support - then you lose around 2.5 stone in the first few months.

I really don't see the necessity of this, surgery taxes your health. If I had surgery I'd be less inclined to work out and more inclined to lie around and eat food to heal and recover.

Even if this balloon creates pressure that makes eating painful, I think people might still do it.

I really think more alternatives should be tried. Women should try to build as much muscle as possible to burn the food off.

Not all are capable of exercise, mee i suffer with arthritus and never was overweight until i had a riding accident that put me in a wheelchair and on crutches for 3 yrs in which time i put on nearly 5 stone..
I still own my horses so exercise daily to a certain extent that my body enables me, i also holiday several times a year and swim plenty whilst on holiday everyday several times a day..
So i do think the skinny minnies who are thinking they are being clever with pathetic replies might think a little deeper about others and their difficulties as to dieting and exercise..
Obesity in my eyes is another addiction such as smoking, drinking, taking drugs, however if we look deeper into SOME of those who do have addictions there is with a large amount a reason for it..
Friend of mine had the gastric bypass as weighed 31 stone, reason for her weight was she was sexually abused by her father for several years so got the idea in her head if she were fat he would leave her alone..
30 YRS ON She reported him to authorities, trained as a mnature student at Uni whilst caring for her 6 children although supported by a amazing husband and qualified as a social worker to work with other abused children now with the Police and has had sucessfull surgery and weight loss, she weighs 11 stone..
So as said before i really do find some opinions not helpfull..
I myself now am opting for the gastric band as said only need to loose 5 stone, i have lost 2 stone on my own in last 18 months but struggle to loose anymore, this then will also hopefully let me lessen my medication that am taking as will have less weight on my arthritic joints and in doing so with the weight lost then let me become fitter to work with my Pure bred arabian horses and show them and race them to their full ability with a owner that can have a darn sight more mobility..

Clearly, the people who have had a balloon fitted haven't followed the orders from their surgeon such as diet and exercise or not even been given them in the first place (Hence why you should research companies before throwing your money about). I very much doubt that a company would sell a treatment for such a huge price, knowing it doesn't work. Another problem, people who fall into the cosmetic surgery trap is that they think one hour with a cosmetic surgeon will fix all their problem's, well you need to get real and realise these procedures they do are only a starting point and its up to the patient to work with that procedure to get the best benefits from it. The gastric balloon is only a tool to stop you putting on weight by restricting you intake of food, it has never has been advertised as a fat burner because this is, as I pointed out above a patients responsibility eg; exercise.

I went abroad and had a balloon fitted 10 days ago, so far I've lost 9lbs. I do feel tired as I'm eating much less than before. I do feel hungry at the nomal meal times but fill up really quickly. I've stuck with the eating plan given to me by the clinc and so far have only been sick twice, and that was my fault for eating too much in one go. I have acid reflux and am struggling to find something to combat that. I've started cycling to work and back, about 4 miles in total and that does tire me out, but I believe it'll be worth it in the long run. As other people have said you have to be willing to put in the effort and change their habits it's a great tool to help. I was struggling with my portion sizes and overeating and so am hoping this will get me back on track and keep me there when I have it removed.
