How To Recognize The True Silver?

Postby gbjetnet on Fri Aug 29, 2008 3:20 pm

Hi all, I hope somebody can help me here. Recently I bought lots of silver jewellery from abroad, but I am not really sure now if it’s real silver. Not long ago I find an amazing article about “Recognizing the true silver” unfortunately I didn’t read it all as I need it to go to work, then didn’t have time for the next few days until last night to go back on the website, but I can’t find it now? Maybe is something wrong with me or my computer?

However, if somebody knows some tricks please let me know.

Many thanks!

Jessica

From retailing some silver jewellery on my website, I would say that all silver jewellery should have the 925 markings on it. Silver quality varies as the cheaper silver jewellery weight in terms of grams hence you can buy silver very cheap which weights very little in terms of grams and some will be very expensive because the have a lot more . hope it helps.

I remember hearing that any silver bought in the UK or US and marked 925 or Sterling is guaranteed 95 per cent pure silver. Anything bought in Mexico contains the other 5 per cent...

Not all silver jewellery has 925 markings on it. The mark that identifies Sterling silver is a Lion Passant - 925 is more likely to be European - and not all silver is pure enough to bear a Sterling or 925 mark. Pure silver is too soft too use as is, and is usually alloyed with copper to give it sufficient strength to withstand handling. Sterling silver is the British term for an alloy that contains 92.5% by weight of silver. The term is not, however, generally used in Europe, where such high grade silver is usually referred to instead as 925 (the number indicating the percentage of pure silver in the alloy).

A lower number indicates a lower percentage of silver - it is still silver, it is just not of as high a grade as Sterling silver. Being of a lower grade than Sterling should also mean that the metal is harder wearing, hence the common use of 800 silver for cutlery.
