I have always had rather large, long lips naturally. But since I was into tattoos and piercings at a young age, I was excited at the idea of controlling my vagina too.
I started by pulling with my fingers all the time and it worked pretty well, but my hands actually got tired alot. After I got my clit piercing, I started hanging stuff from it. I was so excited that I ended up getting 3 piercings in each of my labia within a few months.
It was smooth sailing after that; I would hang stuff from all my piercings. When I was home I would use the heaviest items I could hook on there, and while I was at work I used smaller weights that would hang all day. Since I had a mostly stand-up job, I progressed rather quickly. It was only a month into it that I was hanging four full size padlocks every moment of being home. (that made it hard to walk at all, much less without gathering everyone's attention).
My best way of doing it was after the padlocks felt too light, my husband and I hooked a very heavy chain onto each of my labia, through the piercings. I would walk around the house (and yard sometimes!) with about 10 pounds of metal chain hanging from each of my lips.
That's about the height of it for the last 5 years or so; we can't think of any other way to pull any harder, and besides, the results are positively smashing! We both love it. If I ever get to be able to stretch each one to 12inches, I'll stop there.
As for the thickness, yes, I have lost some of the thickness due to stretching, but not a lot.

I think the weights while you were standing all day were really key. It's the long hours of stretching that get you the most growth. 10 lbs on each lip is another incredible achievement. That must feel amazing. Here's an idea for adjusting the weight to whatever you wish while also being more discrete in public. Attach a strap (velcro perhaps) to each leg just below the knee joint with some form of elastic attached and running upward to hook to the lip on that side. Think of a man's sock garter working upside down. For elastic, you can use a chain of rubber bands, elastic banding from a fabric shop, or surgical rubber tubing as examples. By adjusting the strength and length of the elastic you can have as much tension as you desire. The elastic will lie against your thigh and the lip will be pulled down against your thigh, so a pair of baggy pants will hide everything while you are in public (except the wet spot perhaps ). As you walk, each lip with get a bit of extra tug with each stride.

I'd love to know if you decide to try this and how well it works for you. Also I'm wondering how long your lips hang down with no weight and if the holes you are pierced through have stretched and elongated to the point where you are worried that they might tear through

Yes, my husband IS very lucky!

I've had very little problems with them getting raw or dry. It's happened, but barely noticeable. All you have to do is rub a thin coat of vaseline on them and they are fine for hours. (I would usually rub it on, then rub off the excess a few minutes later with a towel so it doesn't make a mess.)

One of the biggest problems for me is when I attach the piercings from my labia to my naval piercing and leave them together. It's not a problem with no clothes on, but when I wear pants or shorts or anything the waistband can be pretty harsh, especially on the remaining piercings. I just have to be careful when adjusting or removing my pants/skirts when I have them hooked together.

If you want to stretch for the width of your lips, you might try hooking the upper piercings to your "bungie belt" and run a cord, rubber bands or a or bungie from one lower piercing, back to where the first bungie crosses your tailbone and forward to the other lower piercing. That way your uppers will be pulled up and forward, while your lowers are pulled down and back.

One woman I know who was really into seeing how far she could stretch her labia measured her progress by seeing how large an object she could wrap them around and get them to meet on the other side.
