all modern cars are quite reliable unless you're abusing them, eg you are holding low gear at high speed all day; or never change engine oil, etc.
each model of car has its intended usage by design and their drive-train are set up accordingly for that usage. it takes compatible driving style and traffic conditions to better the set-up. most city cars including the smart are not intended to be driven hard, they are not meant to run quick. if you don't realise this and revv the car too hard then engine may run into trouble cooking itself; then again you should only end-up a bigger service bill and a break down shouldn't happen if you service your car regularly (notwithstanding you've got a lemon).
if you think you are a paranoid, you should use auto mode and let the computer take over.
