In my town in the Midwestern USA, I first became aware of girls my own age having their ears pierced when I was in the fourth grade during the 1965-1966 school year. In fact, I can trace my own obsession with earrings to a girl in that class named Laura, who always wore a pair of what were, for a nine-year-old at the time, spectacularly large gold hoops in her pierced ears. That summer of '66, a friend of my parents' pierced my ears for me with a sewing needle and a cork. She was the only "respectable" adult anyone in the family knew at that time with pierced ears herself, and she was happy to do it for me even though it made my mom cringe. (My mother never had her ears or anything else pierced in her life.)

I first started seeing double- and triple-pierced ears around 1973 or so about the time I went off to college; of course I had mine done straight away as soon as I realized it was possible, and wore five in each ear through most of the late '70s and '80s. Now I'm up to 16 on each side.

Pierced ears fashionable

Postby Karen Jones » Mon Jan 21, 2008 2:20 am

In New Zealand ear piercing took off in 1975.I worked at a department store and ear piercing took place every day in the jewellery department often with waiting lines of ladies, most in there twenties.
Wonder what the biggest reason is that some ladies have not had thier ears pierced.

No it would NOT because they dont exist,

Diane used to post as "Barefoot Susan" and when exposed as a liar came back in a new guise but with basically the same posts,

I have my ears pierced 18 times, blah, blah, blah...........No picture will be posted though as you cant take pictures of something you dont have.

This is simply some guy with an ear piercing fetish.

Certainly, I have a few interests in common with Barefoot Susan, but we are not the same person and, to the best of my knowledge, live on opposite sides of the Atlantic. One clear distinction is that she and I have very different opinions about footwear, if you'll read the posts from both of us. I have only ever posted under this name, and started while Ms. Susan was still quite regularly active on the board, so we were posting at the same time, occasionally in the same thread, for awhile.

I actually signed on here today to say that I will post a link to some pictures when I have some that are technically acceptable. Right at the moment, I don't have any images that I'm pleased with.

I will say that posts like the one I'm quoting are the kind of thing that discourage people from being entirely open and honest, as I've tried to be. I am sympathetic to why Susan and others might choose not to post images of themselves out of concern for their own privacy.

I plan to just continue posting on the topics that interest me and let the readers judge for themselves the veracity of my messages. I plan to ignore future anony-mous insults.

Yes, I remember.
I had my ears pierced, two holes in each ear, in the 80's I think.
Unfortunately when I stopped wearing earrings, on hole in one ear healed itself too well, and a big lump formed ~ Yuk!
It's over active scar tissue, called a Keloid scar. I wish I'd never had my ears pierced now, I guess you live and learn!

Pierced ears became fashionable in the northeastern United States in the 1960's. See my rather long post on page 1 of "Ear piercing Before the Gun was Invented" for my story on piercing my own ears in 1964. Pierced ears became fashionable for babies and little girls about 1970 when women who had their own ears pierced a few years earlier starting having children.

The first time I saw a double pierced ear was at Cape Cod about 1973. They became common about 1980.

when did pierced ears bacome fashoinable

In Israel, I think until the early 70's pierced ears were considered a "diaspora" thing, as a negative trait. Israeli middle class was predominantly Ashkenazic - mostly from eastern Europe. Jews of Eastern Europe used to pierce Baby girls ears, but the ones who came here wanted to be New Jews, and I think ear piercing was considered "backward". Jews who came from Islamic countries continued to do it.

It's interesting a girls' book about a newcomer from Russia in the early seventies was called The Funny Girl ("funny" is a pejorative here ) With the Earrings - earrings on a 10-12 YO girl were considered odd back than.

Then, I think pierced ears were imported again - but now from the west, maybe the US. I remember my aunt pierced her ears around 71, at the age of 21, and she was the first one in my family (but we didn't have any girls). In 77 I was in the seventh grade, and a bunch of girls came back from the summer with pierced ears. a year later two or the three girls in my class pierced a third hole. Pierced ears for girls became the rule.

For boys, it took a couple of years more - in 77-78 I first saw tourists with earrings, and it was so weird. But five years later when I pierced my left ear it was quite common (of course, left ears only - both ears become common in the early 90's).

Baby girl ear piercing became somewhat fashionable in the eighties but I think it lost popularity since. But piercing ears in kindergarten age is common.

Nose piercing first became fashionable in the eighties, but since the nighties - with Indian fashion - it's really popular, recently among modern orthodox girls.

I can assure you that I am not Diane Smith.
I no longer post regularly not because I was 'found out' but because your completely unfounded comments were detracting from the actual subject of the forums to which I contributed.

pierced ears fashionable

Postby uri » Sat Feb 23, 2008 2:19 pm

Susan and Diane, don't mind all the "hunters", just keep posting.

Obviously, it is stupid to assume that a woman who says she's going barefoot all seasons is the same with one who says she doesn't leave home without her heels. It's even more stupid to assume that just because someone wouldn't post pics for one reason or another, s/he's lying.

Besides, those people try to police others, like everyone owes them an explaination. cool off! it's a web, it's a free for-all: you don't necesarily have to know if I'm writing from an English susburban house or from a tent in Bin Laden camp in southeastern Afghanistan (id I don't tell you). We are to chat about thing that interest us. You want to play secret service you might apply - they are looking for new recruites in the MI5, so I heard (well of course I didn't).

We're here to talk about pierced ears. I do have a fetish for them (I don't admitt, it's not a crime), for others it's just another subject of interest, and if someone enjoys telling s/he was doing something s/he doesn't (I don't, I pierced myself enough for real - I don't have to make it up. And sincerely, I'm pretty sure neither Susan nor Diane do) - well that's the web, right? It's not like someone is cheating for money or practicing medicine unliescenced or getting a degree or even a date here - so calm down.

I'm from germany, in my memory, pierced ears become fashionable and common with the gun in the end of the 70's. A lot of women got their ears pierced. My mom and my sister got their ears done at the local jeweller. In 1983, a boy at our school got his left ear pierced, his mom got a second hole and his sister waer three holes in her left ear. In the following weeks and months a lot of girls got their ears pierced. Some boys did the same and got their left ear pierced. At the end of the eighty's most of the girls in my class had pierced ears. Several of them had an extra hole in their left ear. The Girls tried to persuade boys to get the left ear done.

In one case i was concerned:
After School my friend and two girls went windowshopping, in the window of a jeweller the girls saw a singn "painless Earpiercing" they talked about pierced ears and would get an extra hole. We went in, the Girls choosed a pair of piercing studs and each got a second hole in the left ear. My friend and i watched the procedure. Then the Girls choosed a pair of thiny silver studs and talked into getting our ears done, too. Few minutes later we sat in the chair an got our ear done.

In the 90's multiple pierced ears are common, allmost all girls i know got a double or triple pierced ear. A lot of younger girls got multiple pierced ears, pierced nostrils and Belly buttons. The younger Girls got often pierced together with her mother. A lot of Mothers got multiple pierced ears and other piercings in a age between 30 and 45.
