Matthew and Andrew each had their ear pierced this afternoon. Following advice from a member who I PM'd I was advised to make sure they were pierced using good quality studs, so for that reason I didn't let them choose their stud, but had them pierced with 9 carat gold studs. Matthew got a 4mm stud and Andrew a smaller 3mm one. (Matthew chose the bigger one of the two, whereas the smaller one was better for Andrew).

I asked the lady whether my older or younger son should go first since Andrew was a bit scared, and she said it would be advisable to do Andrew first so he didn't get worked up or then refuse to do it. However, he was perfectly fine, he sat on my knee and the lady gave him a teddy to hold on to while it was done.

They are both happy with it and have been showing them off to their mum and their older brothers. My parents and my wife's parents will see them tomorrow (as it is Matthew's birthday) so I know they will not be pleased.

It must have been a tremendous occasion for all concerned.

There is a question now, that I really do wish to put you. Are there any circumstances at all in which you might follow their example. For half a lifetime I wanted to get my ears pierced before finally I did, and during that period I was acutely aware of norms and the feelings of others. I understand perfectly the unwillingness you have had to make it a clean sweep, but hope you will take the plunge one day as I seem to sense that you would really like to if the circumstances were right.

Tomorrow is Yorkshire Day, so a visit to Claire's would be one way of celebrating it?!

It was a good occasion and my boys are absolutely delighted (still showing them off this morning). Matthew is 14 today, so my parents and my wife’s parents will be coming around, so I am not expecting a nice reception from them. However, hopefully they will not air any disagreements in front of them.

I suppose you are right about Claires, I think its feminine façade might be a little off-putting for some. However, before we got served there was another boy who looked a bit older than Matthew (probably 15 I’d say) who was in front of us with his mum. I assume as it is the school holidays a lot of boys and girls are getting it done. I got a smile from his mother anyway!

As I’ve said before, I don’t really have a personal interest in it (other than for my boys who enjoy it – I’m basing that mostly on my eldest two obviously, but it seems it will continue with my younger two). If I was a teenager nowadays then I think I probably would, but my teenage years ended around the time of the last ice age!! The only way I’d ever consider it would be if my wife asked me, which would be the only reason I’d think about it.

I’m not actually “a Yorkshire lad”, I am a “son of Hampshire” born and bred! I have a second home in Yorkshire and a branch of my business, so I am up there a lot of the time. So Yorkshire day I think I’m exempted from!

Congratulations to Matthew and Andrew Colonel! I'm sure they are proud of their studs. Gold studs are such a nice choice for a boy. It is interesting that Matthew got a bigger stud than his brother was there any reason for that?

Ah, it's a small world. I too lived in Hampshire for most of my life (but not born there) and am now in Yorkshire. I started out as a southerner and have been quite successfully converted into a northerner. I prefer the county of my adoption!

I think many guys can be put off by Claire's style, but they (Claire's) are making the effort to remove that barrier without risking a winning business formula; they even had a man serving at one branch I went to. They looked after me well on my first visit and have never given me any cause to feel awkward in going back, to any branch. They definitely have my recommendation.

I've often had to consider things my wife has suggested. Best, not say any more!

I am a manager at Claires, we get lots of boys coming in for thier ears pierced, especially at this time of year (school holidays).
Of course we get more girls than boys and the girls tend to be younger when they have their ears done.
I have worked at Claires for 10 years and during that time the trends have changed, girls get their ears pierced younger now and more boys have them done. 10 years ago it was quite unusual for a boy come in for an earring when they did it was just one ear, now we do a lot more and often boys have both done now.
I thinks Claires has to change a bit more and make a section which less girly for boys to have their ears pierced. Who nows in few years time all boys might be having their ears done just like girls do now.

No, out of the gold studs he simply wanted the bigger one. The smaller one was better for Andrew as he is smaller anyway.

Yes, it was nice to see.

The boy got a diamond type stud (probably identical or almost identical to the ones my 16 year old got pierced with). No, his mum didn't really say anything. She smiled at me after the assistant I asked at the desk went over to the lady doing the piercing (while she was preparing that boy's) and asked if she would do my two boys after.

The only thing that I remember being said was when the piercing lady asked his mother if the marking was OK and then if the end result was OK, and she replied "it looks very nice".

The piercing lady asked me exactly the same questions anyway. I think she did a good job.

My sons will only wear subtle studs or small sleepers.
