I think we should have our boys ears pierced just as we do girls. Earrings have now become commonplace enough for boys that they are no longer something that is unusual. Boys are now getting both ears pierced, instead of just one, and are wearing earrings in the "normal" way - in both ears.

As the other boys see their friends wearing earrings, they will want to get their ears pierced also. And ear piercing is becoming more popular for men in their 30's and 40's.

Earrings for men and boys are here to stay, no doubt. Some people think that one day ALL boys and men will have pierced ears.

So with all of this in consideration, when your son asks to have his ears pierced, take him and get them done. If he has not asked by age 7 or 8, ask him if he would like to get his ears pierced, and encourage him to do so.

Tell them that you think that earrings would look nice on him, and that many boys today are getting their ears pierced. Explain to him that earrings are good jewellery items for boys, since they fit in the ears and are not lost as easy. Show him how earrings can match his clothes or a neck chain.

Explain to him if he has holes in his ears, that he will be able to wear earrings at any time he wants to.

If you have an older son, ask him if he would like to get his ears pierced for his next birthday, and encourage him. Ear piercing is a great birthday gift !

Hargrave,
I know what you mean about there being a temptation to touch the studs I have caught James and Brian fiddling with their ears on a couple of occasions.
Hopefully i can stop any problems by making sure their earrings are cleaned reguarly. I have a 3 times a day routine morning, afternoon and evening when I clean and rotate Brian's and James's studs.

I work in a Claires Accessories shop in Essex. I have worked there for about 5 years and for the last 4 years I have done ear piercing. During that time I have noticed the age of the girls getting their ears pierced is getting younger and the number of boys getting their ear / ears pierced is increasing. On a typical Saturday and Sunday we probably pierce 20 people on each day, I guess normally half or so are girls aged between 3 and 10, 5 or 6 boys of varying ages and maybe 2 or 3 men. We very rarely do any adult women, I guess they are already pierced. The one thing I really hate is when mothers bring in their babies to be pierced, apart from the fact that is a little bit cruel to inflict such procedure on baby, its also very difficult to get their ears even because babies move all the time.
The best thing about doing the ear piercing is to see the childrens faces when they see themselves in the mirror for the first time with their earrings in place.
I think children wearing earrings is just the cutest thing possible.

Interesting that about half the ears you pierce Louise are boys or men's ears.

Just goes to show how popular it is.

So I reckon it's a case of, moms please note! it's a really nice b-day present for your son!

Wonderful thread!

WOW!

What a wonderful thread! I recently had both my lobes pierced and was happy as can be to find this thread. It is not only full of 411 embeded in the messaged but wonderfully comforting in some odd way.

I didn't get my ears pierced at Claire's I got them pierced at a locla Tatoo and piercing place via the wonderfully sweet owner with a hallow point needle. It took me awhile to finally chose the gold ball studs (almost went with the diamond studs). I figured they went well with my blond (reallly blond almost white blond but stil golden). I am looking at some nifty hoop and ball earrings for after my six weeks.

Anywyas, Glad to meet yall and I will stop by here soon to see what's happening.

Hargrave,
In our store we have two ear piercing stations and i am one of four assistants that have been trained for ear piercing that will be on duty at the weekend. We usually work in pairs so we can pierce both ears simultaneously. Obviously this is important with younger children because if you do one at a time they have one ear done and them refuse to have the second one done. I saw this happen once at my hairdressers, a little girl about 5 years old had one ear pierced realized that it hurts a bit and then refused to have the other one done. The mother and child were both really upset and the child left with one earring.
In response to Guests comments, yes it is becoming very popular now for males to have earrings especially younger boys coming in with their mothers to have both ears pierced. It does seem to be a very popular birthday present for girls and boys of the age of about 5 - 9 years. I think having your ears pierced is a really nice birthday present for anyone.

louise P,
Two ear piercing stations ? Must be one of the larger branches of Claires. The branch I went to, in one of my local towns, is not too big and is tucked away in an arcade off one of the main shopping streets - a step back from all the hurly-burly. I went on a weekday morning so things weren't too busy and it all looked nice and quiet. Sub-consciously that's probably the reason why I chose to go into this particular Claires, because I thought it would'nt be too embarrassing for me to sit in the window. (Why do Claires have their ear piercing stations in the front windows ?).

There were just the two girls on duty in the store, and one of them looked after me very nicely. I was'nt offered the option of simultaneous piercings. Probably because the girl thought I looked like a big strong man who would'nt flinch or run away ! (I did'nt). Come to think of it she did my left ear first, so if I had "chickened out" I would'nt have looked too terrible with just the one earring.

Interesting.

So with all the boys whose ears you pierce (and you seem to do a lot, don't you), do they usually seem willing to have it done, or is there a significant number who are clearly being persuaded by their mothers?

Some people like to think that boys getting earrings is almost a growing up, rebellion thing. But it seems to me to be much more of a mom thing with a lot of boys.

Piercing and boys

Postby Mark E on Fri May 13, 2005 1:49 pm

Hi there,
I just wanted to say that it’s great to see so much support for boys and men who want to wear earrings. I’ve been struggling for years to make the decision to get my ears pierced. Back at school in London during the 80’s many of my friends got their left ear pierced – first once, then those more courageous added one or two more while, due to circumstances, all I could do was watch. I remember one of my best friends coming to school one day with three earrings in his left ear and one in his right that he had done all at once. I was so envious and I still wish I could have done the same or even beaten him.
Over the years I worried about what my partner or people at work might say but now I’m in my early thirties, a freelancer and in-between relationships and the time couldn’t be more right. I agree with many of you when you say that it’s nicer for men to get their both ears pierced. I am planning to get my ears pierced this weekend at least once in each ear to start with and later I might go for more.

I agree. I have always wanted my ears pierced, but never had the courage. I used to look at boys, so envious. Once i finished school, there was nothing stopping me, so i plucked up the courage, and went to the local tattoo place. I only had my left ear pierced, but I was so happy. I still wish I would have had both done, but recently i decided to get another on in the left ear. Needless to say, im now so happy.

I wear 2 diamond studs, and people (especially girls) :D say i look really sexy. I have much more confidence now, and all my mates are envious. I have a few tattoos as well, and I finally feel like i fulfilled my dream getting the piercings.

Where I live (in the UK), so many boys have their ear pierced you now feel odd if you don't. To all boys or men out there, just get it done. It feels so good afterwards, and you will just wonder why u ever worried about it in the first place.
