My friend has bought a black knee length dress for the christmas nite out.She is wearing opened toe high heels, would it be ok to wear stockings or tights or should she go bare legged.

A black dress at a party like that requires that nylon covered legs to complete the ensemble. Makes for a nice polished look. stockings, suspenders, tights, pantyhose whatever.

If your friend is planning to wear anything on her legs it has to be stockings

tights/pantyhose or stockings with open toe shoes is generally a fashion no no (yes, even someone who loves hosiery knows this). That being said, I've seen more and more hosiery with open toe shoes this year. Check out Nicole Miller's fashion show for Fall 06, and many of the models are wearing opaques or very dark sheers with open toe shoes.

tights would look very nice with the toes on show but they must be sandle toe tights otherwise they look horrid and old lady like with the shadow showing.

Personally I wouldnt wear anything with open toe shoes.It looks ridiculous!! + it is a fashion no no!!

I never usually wear open toe sandals with anyform of hosiery. I invest in some fake tan.. or wear my pointed toe black sling backs.
