Thats rubbish. English developed from the Germanic derivative spoken by Angles and Saxons. When William the Conquerer invaded in 1066 French became the dominant language. From there it became influenced by Latin - Chaucer was very "french" in his use of language - but compare that to Milton with his latinate influences. Every language develops and changes and if you look at the etymology of words you can see where the roots are.

When I say Swedish language read... Nordic and Vikings not bloody Abba!

This is more politics than language, but one thought.... how many English or American bother to try and learn the language of a country they visit or even live in... try visiting the Costa del Sol and listening to what goes on around you...

Trust me rabbit, I would never go to a foreign country without learning their language first.

Spain has its own language, France has its own, Russia, has its own...pretty much every country has its own predominant language.

Here in America, that language is English. Therefore, any immigrant who comes here should be forced to learn English.

I would never go to a foreign country and expect them to adopt to my language.

I am not interested in keeping the buggers out and trying to develop a super-race of Little-Englanders.

Neither am I - but surely the point is what will develop from the current situation - change is not neccesarily bad but on the otherhand it may not be good either - immigration from Eastern Europe is something which should perhaps be seen this way - A way of which; to all intents points to a gamble.

A thought which occured to me the other day - was to wonder how much the Race Relations Industry was actually worth!

You see people like us have had these conversations before - 10-20 years ago they were talking about this and no doubt our children may be asking whether it is right or wrong that yet another batch comes to these shores. Perhaps they themselves will have their Lawrence enquiries, brixton Riots, Beckton byelections - maybe just maybe we will have Tories saying that the banks of the river are actually collapsing - it seems likely that we will have Liberals speaking to our humanity whilst the value of their house(s) double in a matter of years - No doubt we will see equal hypocrisy from our champagne socialists getting rich as they ensure that their workers enjoy their equality through a minimum wage which mostly goes to private landlords!

I am assured SM that nothing will really change - except that our children will have to go through the same charade!

I dont believe that's true at all. Nobody is forced to speak/learn Spanish in the US. I lived in Miami, and although there is a Spanish dominance there, you could always get around with English.

You also have to remember that it takes time to learn a language. And sometimes it's not easy, especially if you have limited time and interation in the language your trying to learn. You can't expect people just getting off the plane/boat to be fluent in English when they've never been exposed to the language before. It took me at least 2 years to really learn Spanish fluently, and I was studying and using the language everyday in Spain.

But yes, for someone who refuses to make an effort to learn the language, then I totally agree with you. There are some people that live in America for years on end and never make an effort to even learn the language. For those select people, I agree that you have a right to be upset.

Actually Amnesia, many colleges across America require that you take at least 2 years of foreign language in highschool, and I believe the highschool classes of 2017 on up will be required to take a foreign language class in order to graduate.

I don't think its all of the highschools, but it'll probably be alot of them.

Many schools across the world require you to take a foreign language. But I don't see where it said it was mandatory for US students to take "Spanish" as there foreign language.

It could be Spanish, Russian, German, or whatever. The bottom line is it ISN'T English.

Yes... that's why it's called a "foreign" language  . You think it's bad for Americans to be forced to study a foreign language for 2 years?

Sorry, I was just saying that the public education system is gradually forcing us to speak a language other then our native language-English. That is wrong and is detrimental to our soverignty.

Abraham lincoln once said that a "house divided against itself will not stand." A nation where everybody speaks a different language and is unable to communicate in an efficient and organized fashion will fall. English allows us to communicate with eachother, therefore, it should be the national language of the united States.

I played basketball in highschool, and at all times, we were on the same page. We didn't go off and do our own thing. We worked together. Whatever play was called, whatever defense was called, it was our job to make sure that it was run properly. If two of our players played man to man defense while the other 3 played zone-when we were ALL supposed to play zone defense-the opposing team will get easy buckets on us.

Language is the same way. A countrys citizens must be able to work together and communicate-how can they do that if they don't know what they are saying to eachother?

A nation with a bunch of different toungs is like a basketball team that has its players running whatever defense each individual chooses: its doomed to disaster.

:laff: Your analagy sucks  . Still dont see what the harm is in studying a foreign language. Throwing in a year of Spanish with Biology isn't going to destroy the USA.
