Laptop freezes

Postby Blackrat » Tue Feb 13, 2007 12:16 am

Got this recurring problem with my laptop. When I am running Internet Explorer the screen often freezes. Nothing will work. Have to switch off and reboot. Have noticed recently that it seems to happen at exactly the same time the fan kicks in.
Have reloaded xp number of times but does not cure it.

it may be IE. try a different browser. or it could be a sleep issue if it is not just with IE. if so check tthe power management section.

I found that type of freeze up was caused by Macromedia software, plus a very plugged up hard drive full of gigs of crap duplicate temp files, music and videos...

Go to "My Computer", and set the mouse curser on "C"... What is the capacity, the used, and the free?...

Go to Systems Tools>Cleanup, and run the Windows Cleanup...

Run Scandisk Advanced... In some systems it can take an hour...

Run Defrag...

Reboot...

Go to Run.. Type in regedit, and under the Edit tab do a search and destroy for everything macromedia, and shockwave.. deleting every thing the search finds...

You might want to enhance the cleanup by downloading, and running a couple proven safe softwares, that won PC awards: CCleaner.. Easy Cleaner.. Spybot S&D..

Also, in system tools, go to System Information, and under Tools tab pick File Checker, and replace any missing files with your Windows CD... but don't change the modified files, as they may have been modified by your added softwares...
and run an updated AVS...

In Systems Tools> System Information, run IE Repair...

Reboot...

Now how well is your PC working..?

I do this cleanup for every PC I run into that's having any software troubles... It usually fixes them...

The only thing I avoid in EasyCleaner is the duplicates cleaner... Best to leave that one alone... The rest is safe as can be..

My guess is that it could be the IE or something with your RAM. If you were running Vista I would suggest reinstalling SuperFetch but i can't say for certain whats causing the problem.

Maybe you changed your IP when you changed your provider.. and microslop's EULA policing system sees your IP as a pirate Windows user, and is killing your PC's OS, like it destroyed so many client's OS's..?

If the laptop freezes only with IE then it has something to do with IE. Try other browser to further isolate the problem. Also, does it happen during normal browsing? Or are you downloading something?
Are you using Vista? Any anti-virus software installed?

Years ago all my computers would occasionally freeze-up on IE, usually right in the middle of writing important posts, and I'd usually lose those impossible to redo posts.. Some times I got lucky and managed to copy them onto paper before rebooting.. I lost many one hour to three hour posts from IE's instability and hacks, is why I tried all the available browsers, and settled on SeaMonkey, and just forgot about IE and OE crap... I used various security softwares to try to block IE and OE from even Net-connecting... I tried uninstalling OE and IE many times, but that always damaged a Windows OS... Every time I downloaded newer versions of IE, my PC's OS seemed suddenly seriously damaged, so I got most of my download Windows softwares from MajorGeeks, including the huge update packages, and put it all to CD's, and totally boycotted all microslop websites... That was the ticket to installing a glitch free Windows OS...

I would pull the battery and the Internet wire from the tower, reinstall the battery after ten minutes, format the hd with a W98-CD, then pull the battery for ten minutes, then Install the Windows OS, formatting a second time, and add the update packages from CD got from majorgeeks downloads to CD's, then add "tiny personal firewall" downloaded from "Older Versions" from floppy, and set TPF's prefs to block all Internet connections, and to "ask".. Then I'd add all my favorite softwares from a CD... Then I'd run Spybot S&D, an AVS, CCleaner, RegCure, Defrag, ScanDisk, and Easy Cleaner... Then I plugged in the Internet wire to the tower, and never ever went into a microslop website.. Ever!.. cuz if I did, the OS always usually wrecked, and I'd have-to format and reinstall it all over again.. and with a Windows OS an install takes about 8 to 10 hours, while Mint takes about an hour... I just can't ever trust microslop, ever.. except to bully me, cause me lots of undue grief, and waste a lot of my time and money...

Try SeaMonkey: http://www.seamonkey-project.org/releases/ You'll be glad you did... Run through all the prefs...

Why destroy everything, does your pc not use macromedia and shockwave for graphics/audio/video or something?

DO NOT touch the MS windows registry UNLESS you know EXACTLY what you are doing one wrong move and windows might NEVER boot again!!!!

Or.. If you have the OS install CD's, and the EULA passwords.. download about twenty after-market reg cleaners, and various other Windows cleaners, and run them all.. and get right into the registry, deleting whatever the h you feels like... Mess up the whole OS as bad and hard as you can.. then simply drop-in the install CD, reboot, format-C, and install a fresh new OS... Have a little fun destroying the OS's.. It's a good way to learn some of what not to do.. and it's a "riot"...

It's like what I did to Linux OS's when I first started using Ubuntu... I destroyed Ubuntu about 6 times right off, testing different distros, and various downloads, and just fer the h of it, deleting bits of the OS... No probs.. it takes only a couple hours to reinstall a fresh clean Ubuntu OS.. No loss...
A Windows OS takes at least 6-hours, so you probably don't wants to go messing in a Windows OS, unless it's already damaged, and needs a new install anyway... But don't fear the registry... Have some fun killing a registry and OS, if you're brave and bored... It's how you learn some things...
The best thing I found for Windows OS's, is to change them to Mint Gloria, or Mint Helenna, and burn the Windows install CD's in the incinerator...

In running Windows OS's, I discovered that any macromedia stuff definitely caused the OS to run glitchy and very slow...

For every new OS install, I made it a rule to: Go to Run.. Type in regedit, and under the Edit tab do a search and destroy for everything macromedia, and shockwave.. deleting every thing the search found that had macromedia, shockwave, adobe, and flashplayer, in it...

I think the problem is that almost everyone who uses Linux has installed it themselves and knows at least a bit about computers. The vast majority of Windows users bought their computer from a chain store with Windows and any software they have purchased already installed. They have no idea how to install an OS, what the registry is or for that matter anything much else about what goes on "under the bonnet" of their computer. It's a bit sad but it's what Microsoft wanted, at least in my opinion - keeps them dependent.

Even worse if they have bought their computer from a dodgy source they may not even have Windows install CDs.
