Jason's Dad,

What do you mean by "noticed" your earrings? Recenlty I was talking with a woman who was holding her 10 month old son in her arm. She was wearing small hoop earrings. Suddenly her son reached out and pulled on one of her earrings. I thought he was going to pull it out of her ear. She reached up with her free hand and removed his fingers from her earring without missing a word in what she was saying, so I assume his pulling on her earring is a somewhat regular occurance. Her son has definitely "noticed" her earrings, but I do not believe she has any intention of piercing his ears.

Well personally, I think any troll should be "outed" and stopped.

That way we can save our energy for people who are genuine.

It happens once in a while, Colonel. Not very much. I think there are jsut too many that participate under guest, myself included. I know you will understand, not every soldier learns the same way. Some have talent and require little supervision in field stripping their rifle, others need other motivational techniques. Some only get it when you get down and brutally blunt with them. This place has a lot of all of the above. Trolls could be outed, but they only come back, and with a new angle, or at the very least a more disturbing twist to their routine. It does keep this place alive and full of drama. Which in turn generates posts and hits.
Chikan, bukakke, paipan,....more badness to come!

Good point, but nevertheless its sometimes worthwhile to know who they are.

Yes thats true! I've had quite a bit of fun with trolls in the parenting section, some of the stuff written is good enough for a television sitcom!

We had the same problem starting when Jason was about eight months old. My wife and I both stopped wearing hoops and now wear mostly small stud earrings. Jason continued to grab at them, but he could not get a real grip on them. After a lot of saying "No" he has finally stopped grabbing at them. He cannot clearly say "earring" yet, but he will touch his own ears and say something that sounds like "ring" or "me ring" particularly if he has just seen either of us changing our earrings.

Ear piercing age

... let them decide, when they want to have it.

It makes no sense to me for children (girls or boys), when they are too young and they do not really want it by themselves.

But I think it is not a problem when they go to school and you ask them, if they want to have earrings. I know a lot of families, where both parents have earrings; since the children are used to that it is understandable, that they want it, too. So no wonder, that their boys have earrings, too. And I see no reason to make a difference between boys and girls.

To most children having their ears pierced is a big event in their lives. Is it fair for the parents to take this 'rite of passage' away from them by piericng their ears while they are too young to have any say in the matter?

Ear piercing for Boys

I wish my parents had either pierced my ears or asked my if I wanted them pierced when I was younger. It would have saved me all the heartache and hastle of choosing to do it when I was older.

I think the option should happen prior to a child going to school so that they can be taken out during school without fear of holes closing. That way the child has the option growing up, to wear or not wear.

I agree that the piercing optimally should be done before a child starts school--as long as he or she wants it done.

I also believe parents should explain the options to their children--just as they do with so many other decisions in life.

Finally, I've come to believe that gender doesn't matter. Boys, girls, men, women all should be able to have pierced ears if they so choose, with no recriminations from society or the fashion police.
