Absolutely! In fact I think people who wouldn't be a bully offline might act like one _ but not realise they are being a bully because they normalize it or justify it as 'not real' because they are saying it to a computer screen instead of someone's face.

They are also more likely to feel ., so feel daring enough to be more extreme. Only problem is that everything is permanently recorded _ and I'm sure they have some way of tracking back to people.

The other thing that encourages cyber-bullying is in groups against out groups and went posts are a means of claiming social hierarchy. People at the top of the pecking order will want to chop off at the knees others making their way up, or others on their way up will want to topple the ones at the top.

Sure they do.

I've seen it all over the internet - some people seem to think that the point of discussion is to bludgeon everyone else into accepting their view, and so when somebody posts a rational and well-reasoned defence of a contrary view, they start attacking the person rather than responding to their arguments.

Others like to belittle others to make themselves look and feel good / important / clever or whatever - just as in real life.

And then there are the paranoid conspiracy theorists, the wreckers and the destroyers.

Yeah - there's no shortage of cyver-bullies. Alas.

Attacking people is a sure sign that they can't make a solid return argument and I guess the old ego can't accept it so they chuck a childish tantrum. I note a lot of this type of behaviour gets blamed on teenagers, but I reckon the most part of them would be adults

yes I agree.

THere are some great points there you lot have made.

Bullies are usually cowards and the majority of them hide behind as a guest so noone will know who they are, which I think is pretty sad.

I agree with the attacking the person instead of their thread, that is wrong, a debate is having a heated discussion on the topic it doesnt really mean that it gives people the chance to attack or abuse the person itself.

It takes a strong and a big person to beable to have a heated discussion or a debate with someone and NOT attack them as a person and still be good friends with eachother.

As for name calling goes, I dont get the point of it, to me its just really immature and doesnt mean a thing, but I am an adult and so looking at name calling it just means childish behaviour to me.

Maybe a category of "Does it matter" could have been added..All you have etc do is log off and go and do something worthwhile instead.

The amusing thing about the people who shout at about the bullying etc etc is that they are usually the people involved in it somewhere else in the chain.

What goes around comes around .
