feminine guy needs hair advice

Postby satinlover28 on Mon Jan 28, 2008 10:42 pm

Ive just reached 28 and have decieded to finally be my self !

Last week i just got my ears pierced and now want to go further.

I want a short womans style, my hair is only about 2 inches all over.I cant deciede what style would look most feminine, i also want to get my eyebrows waxed at the same time, what would be the best type of place to get this done, i live in south east uk.

I know people will think its really wierd, but i have to do it, im really worried about how other people will react tho

First of all, congratulations, hon. I truly believe that life is too short to play by someone else’s rules. You just have to be who you are. My own biggest fear is being on my death-bed and realizing that I never took a chance to do (or be) something really important to me because I was too scared, and I vowed that I’m never going to let that happen to me.

I’m male, but as you can see by my pic, I do favour a pretty androgynous/feminine look myself. It’s taken me a while to be comfortable being open about it, but I took the plunge about eight years ago and honestly, I’ve never been happier. My friends, family and neighbors are all supportive, and I live in a rather progressive town; I’ve never had a bad experience being out and about (pun intended  ) so I guess I’m pretty lucky.

My suggestion to you would be to simply ask around in a few local salons. Be up-front about what you’re after, and see what sort of response you get. If you act self-confident (but not belligerent, of course) people will usually respond positively to that. A “this is how I am, and I’m fine with it” attitude will encourage others to respond in kind, I’ve found.

I suppose there will be a few who may respond badly (although probably far less than you’d think), and you just have to be ready for that. Generally, most shops and salons have the attitude that your money is as good as anyone else’s, and if they can help you out, then it’s win-win: you get what you want, and they get paid. My own experience has been that many girls in hair and aesthetics salons (and clothing, cosmetics and jewellery stores too, for that matter) are actually pretty enthusiastic about helping a guy look more feminine. Don’t ask me why. Maybe it has something to do with finding something in common (hair, makeup, nails, jewellery, whatever) that they can share… in other words, the guy expressing an interest in being on the same “team” so to speak. (And by the way... yes, as you say, a few people will definitely think it's weird, but my experience has been that it's far fewer people than you'd expect.)

So, do give it a shot! There are short feminine hairstyles, even ones as short as a couple of inches, although I would definitely encourage you to let it grow, if you can, since that would open up a lot more possibilities.

And best of luck! (sorry about the long-winded reply)

thanks for the reply

It sounds like good advice, ive just made an appointment at a salon in a weeks time, its late opening so i hope its quiet.

I wanted a short style so i can get it done now, but id like to grow it out longer later on. Can you suggest any short styles for me ?

Do you think i should gradually get my eyebrows arched or just get them done how i want.

Cool! Hope it's a good experience! Like I said before, just be yourself. It's okay to be nervous, the first few times, but just be honest and friendly, and I think things will work out.

It's hard to make a good recommendation without knowing your body type, the shape of your face, hair color and whether it's naturally straight or curly, thick or thin, etc. But I think something like this is cute, and it's quite short, so it would do until you get some length...

Well, I'm all for just "going for it!" But really it's what you feel most comfortable with. Personally, I'd want to have the just same eyes as the woman in that picture... eyebrows, makeup, the works! But that's me. :D Again, it's whatever works for you. If you have fairly tidy eyebrows to begin with, you could get them done the whole way, nicely arched. If they're really bushy, then maybe going a little more gradually might be the ticket. On the other hand, if you're all pumped about your appointment and you come away not looking a lot different than when you went in, you might feel let down. Maybe ask the person who's working with you for their ideas.

Again, sorry for the wordy reply... :)

So I’m just wondering, if you don’t mind me asking… How far down this “road” do you think you’ll go? Any thoughts, or is it too early to tell? Are you thinking of just sticking to the hair and eyebrows for now, or taking it further? I mean, there are different degrees of femininity, right? What’s your ideal situation, by which I mean, where do you think you’d LIKE to be, ultimately? Androgyny? Going the “fully femme” route, or something in between?

Just wondering. Depending on what you have in mind, I might be able to offer some suggestions and advice, as one who’s traveled that road already. :)

So, satinlover28, have you been to your appointment yet? If so, how did it go? Would you post a pic or two somewhere?
