hi,
im from australia and i was randomly googling female mechanic workshops, as im thinking of opening one in my home town in australia. im scared, but i know it could be something, i too, like the other comments ive read, love cars, love doing my own up, and most of all love getting my hands dirty.
i take great offence to those that assume i work on my car and have pride in it, because its "the fashion" or bcoz i mite impress guys.
cars ahve been and always will be my passion, and i feel sorry for girls that believe pretending to b interested in them will make them more appealing. (now thats out of the way)
the town where i live is, surprisingly to most, still a very backward country town (population 300,xxx) my life was made very difficult trying to study mechanics. i had a few good ppl trying to push me into the industry and i fell in under a company by the name of the VACC, who run an apprenticeship program, after months of trying places to get me an apprenticeship, i was turned down due to my sex time and time again. so naturally, they gave up on me. iv undertaken work experience and received mostly complaints, prejudice, slanders and discouragement, AND also some good guidance and help, and it's small minded comments like that of a certain user/guest on the first page of this topic that can crush dreams and hopes. resorting to derogatory comments about female body function in order to house their own insecurities.
however, back on topic.
after i was pushed out of the apprenticeship scheme i was given a place out of sympathy at a tafe studying mechanics, there, i learnt the basics, and loved it. my all male classmates grew to respect me and further great friendships. it was difficult at first. as im, blonde, busty and with blue eyes to be taken serisouli at all... (not trying to pump myself up, just adding background to my story)

i know there has to b other women out there like me, and i wish to give them the opportunities i never had, hence, my idea of opening my own shop. i have some good support, a good guy mate who is a fully qualified mechanic, my bf, a good but not qualified mechanic and my parents.

surely there would b a market...appealing to women sick and tired of being ripped off by men that assume we know nothing.
in saying that, every time i have gone to inquire about parts for my car with my bf, every where we went, the male service men automatcially assumed that my bf owned my car, and never spoke to me directly. even after i made it clear i owned the vehicle and it was my money on the table.

i want this to change.

there is NO reason women cannot do as good, if not better job then men in trade. examples being, we are usuali smaller, i came in handy during my training as i had smaller hands, also, we have good attention to detail, and usuali, USUALLY, dont enjoi ripping customers off.
i ges, i posted here, to show support and proud-ness of the women posting here AND for the people willing to accept this movement.
and also, for some moral encouragement....
thanks.

Female Mechanics rule!!

Postby Kate from England on Sun Jan 04, 2009 9:48 pm

Hey, I read your blurb and I have been through exactly the same! :o To the first guests comment... You must be so narrow minded, you are one of those people in life that will NEVER get anywhere due to your stupidity and arrogance. No one likes a great idea to be knocked back! Your comment was not wanted! or found to be nessesary.
Any way, in reply to your writting, I thought it was all very true and that I have found the same problems but have got a bit further, probably due to the people I have met along the way. I am REALLY REALLY wanting to set my own garage up. I have been working on my business plan since I left school and my biggest problem is money, or finding a way around it. I've had a few offers but not any suitable ones. I also, whenever i've asked for jobs have only been asked for a date and not been taken seriously. If you feel you'd like to ask me anything, feel free. We may well be able to help each other out.

Hi, I live in London and I'm looking for a female mechanic who would be interested in running a training day for me and a group of my friends. Basics like changing a tyre, routine checks we should do, how the engine works, what each part is and what it does etc. Probably a one day thing, paid of course. If any female mechanics out there are interested in doing this can you get in contact?

Why do you need a female mechanic for your course? Don't you really need a good trainer?

Well a good trainer is always what you want, but I think if the group are more comfortable they'll get better results. And I think having a female mechanic is an easy way to make everyone comfortable - they won't worry so much about stupid questions etc.

I can understand that. Your course would only be of value for women with older cars.
There's not much you can or should try with modern cars. What there is to know about the art of changing a wheel , advice for emergencies and routine maintenance could go on an A4 sheet.

Don't waste your money.

Its so good to know other lassies out there are in the same boat. Just finished level 2 in Motorcycle Maintenance and Repair, start level 3 after the summer. At first couldnt decide whether to do cars or bikes, my bofriend has his own car and commercial garage so picked up loads by helping out there in my spare time. Trying to find a job is a nightmare, both in motorcycle and car trades. Have been looking for a year, going in and asking, sending CVs, applying for vacancies but nothing. Feel like nobody will take me seriously, all i'd like is a chance to prove myself. Any ideas?

My only advice is to persevere. Some garages (especially prestigious dealerships) relish the idea of a female technician. However, you will always encounter neanderthals that think that women shouldn't be mechanics. If you can, get your level 3 qualification as that is more ammunition against getting a good job and aim high.
