Thanks hun.. How do I get this Ubuntu to install on a hard drive?..

I've got all the downloads CD's.. and I've got a box full of hd's... Now what?..

I think that the best way to try out Linux for a while in order to decide if you like it is to use one of the "live" distributions such as Knoppix (which is essentially Debian). If you have a fast broadband connection you could download it, but it's probably easier to spend around a fiver and buy a DVD or CD version.

The beauty of this approach is that you don't install it - it runs off the DVD or CD drive, so no danger of screwing up your computer: if you take out the disc and reboot, your computer is back as it was.

Me thinks it ain't gonna be easy.. but once I gets over the first bump, it should be harder sailing.. and get easier as I disassemble the initial parts of the nightmare... And the thing I like about it, it gets me out of the great money-sucking world's Windows Systems graveyard... Plus, Linux people are generally intelligent, caring, honest folks, compared to the Windows hoards and boards... I reeeadyy.. I just finished building my new computer desk and swivel sports car bucket sleeper-seat computer-desk chair... I've got the computers setup on the desk, a stack of hard drives, a stack of towers, state of the art screen, mouse, and keyboard.. and have this bunch of Linux CD's that don't do anything like the Windows CD's did when put into the slot... This is gonna be like learnin' to walk again.. oyie!...

also changing the partition size of a WORKING operating system to but a second OS on it is not for the faint of heart ,you can FUBAR the working windows xp/vista
buy a second hard drive and install it as a "slave "( second spot) and windows hdd as the "master "

myself i don't run ubuntu but gentoo '08 and fedora 9 .these two( gentoo,fedora) are the best choice for the new person just getting into linux
however ubuntu is a good first choice for the beginner

Yes I agree with installing Linux on a separate hard disk to Windows. Typically when you install from a distribution such as Ubunu (which I haven't used) or Suse (which I have) etc it will see your Windows disk, which Windows calls "drive c", as hda and the second as hdb, so if you install on hdb, it should sort out partitions for you (unless you choose to partition manually) and install a bootloader such as Grub or Lilo, so you can select Windows or linux.

Nothing should go wrong, but best to back up any irreplaceable data first just in case!

Normally when you go into windows after installing Linux it won't see your hdb disk at all.
