well that is the power saver . and mostlikley one of two settings
for a desktop :
it might be a setting for the monitor or a desktop setting for hibernation and sleep .
For a laptop check the power saver setting.
The exact place to look depends on what operating system you are using

Windows Vista
mac 10.1

You have to throw away the computer, monitor and the desk that it is sitting on. Buy two new computers and reinstall everything. When one of the new computers has this problem you must turn the other one on, throw the first one away and go back to step 1.

There is no other way around this, I'm afraid.

50p and a mars bar, reckon you wont need the mars bar for an all singing/dancing multprocessor/quad core pair of machines.

oh dear - it just did it again - this time I could see a small area of screen down the left hand side - and I pressed Control Alt Delete and it came on again only in Huge format - with a box which said "nv4 - disp display has stopped working."

I re-booted and its back on but for how long

an "nv4" error is mostilkey a problem with your graphics driver ,seeing as your screen resolution dropped to 800x600 or 600x 480
do you know the model of your Nvidia card ( an nv error tends to be a nvidia card) .
i am assuming that you are using the partly disabled, rewrote, mangled one that MS auto installs and updates from " auto update "
I can walk you through uninstalling the POS( piece of sh*t) driver MS gave you and install the correct one
if you don't know the make let me know and i will post back with the instructions on how to find out .

go to
Start /Control Panel / Performance and Maintenance / System
click on the " Hardware " tab
then the " Device Manager " button
look for " Display Adapters " ( near the top of the list )
and click on the " - " ( to the left) to expand the list
double click on the name of the card
and click on the " Driver " tab
and look for " driver version " , something like 175.19( the newest one)

and post the name of the card
ex. GeForce 8800 GT
and the driver number
