DISC CLEANUP

Locate, and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VolumeCaches

Sorry for delay...you found this bit okay ? ^^^

i have located it, its the same one as the one i backed up, right? when i click it it lists HARDWARE,ACPI,DEVICE MAP,keyboard class,PARALELPORTS,POINTER CLASS,scsi,serialcom,video,resource map,sam,software and clicking on each of them i cant see a delete compresed files i,m afraid.....

How long was it since the time before when you used Disk Cleanup?
If it hasn't been long, then likely nothing needs to be done anyway because disk cleanup is just to remove any unnecessary clutter.
Are you maybe wanting to use Disk Defragmenter instead? That'll shuffle all the files into a better order.
There is always the possibility it's time for a complete re-install of Windows.
XP is very good at self-maintenance, but earlier versions of Windows largely relied on 3rd party programs for keeping them running smoothly.
I was using 2000 every day and found I had to reinstall it about once per year because of the build-up of unmovable fragmented files and other non-removable fragments of programs I'd installed and uninstalled over time.
I also found Windows 2000 sometimes ends up having a problem with clearing old data from the RAM, so it ended up freezing after a while. This didn't happen all the time, but it's something I haven't experience with 2 years of using XP. (Yet!)

Hi - You've only gone as far as the Hardware under LOCAL MACHINE; Do a search (Edit > Find) for Volumecaches (there should only be one entry for this). When it finds that you will see Compressed Files underneath, and the keys in the right-hand pane

...I thought thats what the destructions told me to do?¿? i have searched for volumecaches and can only locate the backup i put on the desktop...........

then from within regedit you do edit > search ???

When you run regedit you get a window. At the top of that window is a menu bar. On the menu bar you have an item called "edit", selecting this gives a typical windows drop down menu which contains Find. Selecting Find gives you a "Find What" dialogue box..into which you enter the search you want then press "FIND NEXT".

Bummer. That's the best solution if things start going really wrong, such as programs not running, especially as it being part of Windows itself.

..OK tried it last time and got nothing - this time i have about 16 listings ,14 of files i have downloaded , 1 says default and one for volumecaches......

You search for "Volumecaches" within regedit, and you should only get one return back - the folder volumecaches which when expanded by double clicking on it, will contain amongst other things compress old files. Can you confirm you get that?

..ok i have clicked on the minus signs on the left and now i only have AB default REG_SZ and value not set.....

we need to find the volumecaches entry, expanding only that, to show the other entries nested within that, including the compress old files "folder" below it...can you get to that point?

When you do, select (left click once) on the compressed old files folder.

Once selected right-click the entry and select delete.

Exit regedit.

...Thanks Greg - i,m looking but i cant see anything even remotely similar, in regeit there are lots of files on the left and when i open them i still cant see anything that looks like it..........
