Punishment for wearing tights

Postby Elenwhit on Thu Sep 04, 2008 2:20 pm

Sorry, I forgot to answer your question about this.

I have never had to punish my daughter for wearing tights against my will since (as far as I am aware) this has never happened. I cannot believe she would disobey me this way as she is a well behaved girl and does as she is told. In the very unlikely event that she did surreptitiously don tights when she should be in socks I would be very cross and would likely impose some form of punishment but it would depend on the circumstances and it is not something I have thought about. I am confident it will never happen.

Has she got a long coat to go to school in when the winter comes?

She will continue to wear white socks for school for the whole of Year 11 and I intend that she will do so out of school as well. She will be allowed tights on more frequent occasions than during the last year but this will depend on her behaviour so that she continues to realise that wearing tights is a privilege and not an automatic right. She will wear tights when she enters Year 12, both for school and outside.

Up to now your daughter’s school rules have not allowed tights, but now she’s in year 11 where the option is available, she may feel under peer pressure to wear tights. If she goes against your rule and wears tights, which hopefully she won’t, then the penalty you should impose is no tights at any time until she starts year 12 when she will be almost 17, or during year 12 allowed tights on the same basis as when she reached 15 outside school. I don’t think it would be fair for her to wear socks to school in year 12.

school summer dresses

Postby june d on Thu Sep 04, 2008 5:07 pm

i would imagine if they are doing dresses to age 16 they may be considering increasing the sizes further to say 18 years.

This would then give a school the scope for having its girls 6th form in summer dresses if they wished.

Girls would look very smart dressed in a knee lenght gingham dress with a matching cardigan and maybe anke socks with matching gingham frills

If it were compulsory for all girls in the 6th form no one would feel they were being dressed differently to their friends.

tights versus socks in Year 11

Postby Elenwhit on Thu Sep 04, 2008 6:08 pm

I think it would be highly unlikely that my daughter would be the only girl in Year 11 still in white socks since for the last few years there have been about 10 to 12 girls in the year who have worn socks rather than tights. I don't know if this is because their parents (like me) do not allow tights or because the girls prefer to remain in socks.

If my daughter were the only girl in Year 11 still in socks I would definitely reconsider the situation and most likely allow her tights for school but keep her in socks at all other times. I cannot see this happening though.

In my humble opinion schoolgirls should wear white socks as part of a proper school uniform until they are 16 which is why I impose this upon my daughter. Nevertheless I am not in the business of humiliation and if she were the only girl or one of two or three in socks I would let her wear tights to avoid being teased or bullied.

Jane,

In a perfect world it would be lovely for 6th form girls to dress this way but in the real world you would have a revolution on your hands. Even when I was at school 6th formers were allowed tights and more grown up dresses than the younger girls (although a few 6th formers remained in socks). There would have been a St Trinian's type riot if the Headmistress had tried to put girls of 17 to 19 back in white ankle socks and gingham summer frocks although doubtless some of the staff and parents would have welcomed such a rule.

I should have addressed you as June and not Jane. In too much of a hurry.

A lady friend of mine dresses her schoolgirl daughter of 18 like this for a weekend or two if she stays out beyond her 'curfew time'. It is extremely effective as there is no way her daughter wants to leave the family home in a gingham frock and frilly white ankle socks with tee strap sandals. She has to wear her hair tied in bunches with white ribbon and looks about 12!! She also has to suffer the indignity of early bedtimes to humiliate her in front of her two sisters aged 11 and 14. It sounds cruel but when she is dressed like this her behaviour and manners are perfect.

I wonder if this happens in other households. As the daughter does not leave the home in her little girl clothes then no one else would know except if she is made to appear in front of visitors. It does seem very humiliating but I have heard of a couple of similar cases (one was reported in the newspapers a few years back). I suppose if it works it is worth doing but the girls parents must be very strict.

On the subject of ankle socks for sixth form girls I understand you still see this in some girls schools in South Africa and Australia and New Zealand. I suppose the warm weather makes them more practical than tights

I have heard of this sort of punishment before for older girls.

I think it is an excellant punishment to teach a naughty girl that a curfew is to be adhered to and is not optional.

By keeping her dressed so she won't want to go out or have friends visit and so will be confined to the house for the weekend to think over the error of her ways.

It also sends out a messgae to the younger daughter to obey there parents rules.

Do you know what times she was sent to bed?

I would have added a vest and school knickers to the uniform if she were my daughter as well.

June,

Your sentiments are the same as the girl's mother. She told me that punishing her 18 year old daughter this way has had a salutary effect on the behaviour of the two younger girls who realise it could happen to them when they get older if they are disobedient.

When she is dressed in her little girl clothes she has to be in bed by 8pm with lights out at 8.15pm including weekends. Her 11 year old sister is allowed to stay up to 9pm and the 14 year old to 9.45pm so the 18 year old is treated as the baby of the family. She is also only allowed to watch TV at weekends and then for a limited time.
