If you had a friend who was suicidal, would you help them to get help. Or would you abandon them and look after number one?

Help them out. Always.

It happened to me a few years back and I'd like to think I played a small part in helping them through it.
Nah, our relationship wasn't stable enough.

It depends on the circumstances I guess. For example, you are sitting in a slit trench with your buddy. You are catching the devil in well-placed enemy fire. Together you have 7 rounds remaining between you and a dull KABAR knife. There are 25 jundies that have you surrounded from some heights around you. You are reasonably certain that if they capture you, you will have a starring role in Al Jezeera's next "Infidel Head Cut Off with a Small Rusty Serrated Blade" movie. In that case I would say that my friends desire to commit suicide was probably a Wise and Good Thing. On the other hand, if my friend was talking about killing himself because his skanky girlfriend just bailed on him for some w@nk3r, I would seriously consider getting the guy some help, yes.

That of any help to you?

I had a good friend who was suicidal and I stuck by him for a long time.
Eventually I had to cut him lose as the toll it was taking on me was huge. It sounds selfish but I couldn't deal with the constant calls and txts abouthow he was about to kill himself and "don't tell anyone" it was a big burden to bear alone and I ended up informing his sister and parents so they could deal with it.
I also started suspecting he was trying to emotionlly blackmail me into 'loving' him because the threats would start whenever I would point out his feelings were not returned and that we were friends only

I haven't spoken to him in nearly a year and he is still well and truly alive.

Is true that people tend to turn their backs on their friends when they are in need, almost like they have no conscience.

I was thankful to my friends at the time I attempted it. They wouldn't let me dwell on anything, got me straight to counselling and made me aware of how much I'd hurt other people by doing it. They convinced me that it was too easy to do. I had to grow a backbone and live life.

So I did.

However in the past I have reacted both ways. I have stuck by friends who needed me, but I have also cut contact with others who were using it to blackmail me.

Lots of people can't understand that other people have their own problems too. My friends at the time did the right thing by getting me to see a counsellor... there was no way that they should have to bear all my problems as well as their own

It's true there are some people who cry wolf and are doing it as a cry for help. Then there are others who attempt it numerous times and can't die like they're invincible. If they're threatening and blackmailing you I can understand why people would desert them, but half the time they just want someone to talk to and reassure them life isn't bollocks.

Would you be willing to play Russian Roulette with a revolver? You will hardly get killed. I would not because there is a slight chance that I may get killed. There has also been a case where the person saying he would commit suicide were teased by many to go ahead and do it because they felt that his motive was to gain attention and he would not do it. However, he did commit suicide in front of everybody on web-cam. I would not want to risk placing myself in any of those people's position. On the chance that he may be serious, I would try to get him help.

That's the crucial point.
People who are going to commit suicide don't tend to confide in people.

I didn't tell anyone and I have been very lucky in surviving the attempts
