Pages loading slow!!

Postby elsa73 on Mon Jan 05, 2009 5:04 pm

Ok...so my super sexy gorgeous b/f bought me a new puter for xmas. The old one is now in the kids room (with all the security i can get..before anyone throws hands up). Network is set up...including the ps3 on it.
I am on virgin broadband and my new pc has windows vista.
Can anyone tell me why its seems like i am on dial up at times..or pages simply just dont load?
A friend said it was the Mcafee security causing the proplem but i removed that and put Avast on and it's still happening.
Is it because there are 3 things on the network or a conflict between the vista and the virgin modem?

Can anyone give me some advice pleeaaassseeeeee.

I've still got XP, so I'm not at all familiar with Vista conflicts, unfortunately. However, I do have some suggestions that may help. :)

If there's three computers trying to access the net at the same time, that will slow it a lot. Especially if trying to load high bandwidth sites, such as profile sites or video sharing sites.
If you have a go at accessing the net with all other network devices turned off, or disconnected from the same network and find you're back to normal speed, then that's probably the cause.
I doubt this is the case though because your other computer had no problems.

There could be a conflict between Vista and the modem. Your guess is better than mine on that.

It could be Avast because a search on Google shows a lot of people are having the same symptoms:
http://www.google.com.au/search?q=avast ... =firefox-a

If other programs on your computer are noticeably slower to load with your antivirus software running, then it's very likely that's the cause. To test this you'll have to disconnect from the internet then see how long a program takes to load up with the antivirus software running, then again after disabling the antivirus software. *If you have internet security software too, then you'll also have to test with that. Internet security suites are more known for slowing internet connections than antivirus on its own.

There's a bit about a McAfee conflict with Vista on this page of Microsoft's website:
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums ... 0f85b85be/

From about 2/5 down the page:
"Finally cracked it (after switching off IPV6); turns out culprit (for me) was McAfee

Uninstalled and now she flies ;-)

Hope this helps others"

I have no idea what "IPV6" is. :?

If it turns out to be a conflict between Vista and your antivirus, it's probably best to see if there's a fix first before trying other antivirus programs because every time we uninstall things such as antivirus, they tend to leave behind bits of program in the Windows registry. One of these is because they add date stamps to show when the program was installed. They don't want people to keep reinstalling the program after a free trial has run out. Back in the old days of Windows 95 some people did that with several programs.

I hope I've been helpful!

I* have changed my anti virus from Mcafee to avast..still happened. Spoke to some moron at virgin media who told me that having the usb and ether net cable in may conflict so i took one out...still happening.
Neither the other pc or ps3 are on in the day....still happening!!

Therefore the pc diagnosed its own problem....f***ing conflict with the modem!!!
Arrrgggghhhhh....sorry i had to let that out!! :D

I forgot to ask if you were using USB to connect your computer to the router.
Have you tried connecting to the router via an ethernet cable from your computer?

The conflict is most likely software, rather than hardware, here's why:
My sister and her bf work in IT. She does software and until recently he specialised in networking. I recently updated my single port modem, for a 4 ethernet port router (Like a modem with multiple inputs)
They told me to use an ethernet cable to connect to any network instead of USB cable because USB connections are a lot less reliable due to the software drivers needed for the modem/router. Ethernet ports usually use generic drivers built into Windows or have one driver needed for all ethernet connections rather than specific drivers needed for a modem or router.

While talking about USB ports. There's a lot of external USB powered devices that draw a lot of continuous power through whatever USB port they're plugged into. -Things like USB powered fans. Apparently these things can burn out USB ports through overworking them. I have a friend with a laptop who has one of those 3 fan USB powered bases to cool his laptop, so he avoids using the fans if possible, but if he does use them, he swaps between USB ports every so often to reduce the risk of burning them out.

Yeah i only have the ethernet cable in....
Fans??....in England....we nedd those maybe 1 day in the year!! I don't even own one!!

I really think there is conflict with the modem...its about 4 years old now so it was built before Vista came about!!

Thanks for going through that stuff tho hun...very helpful indeed.

Re IPv6:

IPv6 is an internet protocol

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPv6

Most or all ISP servers are still using IPv4 but most current browsers are set with the ability to handle IPv6.

I don't think this is relevant to the OP, but there may be some speed advantage in Firefox at least in disabling IPv6 support. This is certainly true in Linux, probably true in Mac OSX and may or may not be true in Windows (anybody know?).

CAUTION Be careful doing this or you will screw Firefox up.

Type the following on the address line:

about:config
Press enter
Scroll down until you arrive at the following line:
"network.dns.disableIIPv6"
Double click the line so that "value" changes from false to true.
Close Firefox and relaunch.

You can repeat this procedure to reverse the change back to the default setting.

The only thing I can offer is that my laptop just doesn't work with any anti virus on it, however it is about 5 years old so cant believe it would be the same problem. Maybe to a degree though.....
Your opinion is wrong.
