I run norton anti virus weekly - what else should I be doing to keep my computer virus free and should I be doing the defragmenting thing to tidy it up?

Some of it depends on whether you have dial-up, DSL, or high-speed internet. If it is the latter, there is lots of bad stuff out there, so proper protection is important. You should have a software firewall that is stronger than the one on Windows XP; McAfee and Norton likely have them. You can even consider getting a hardware firewall as well, which would be possible by using a router.

A pop-up blocker is also useful. You should be defragmenting every once in awhile, although if you have a big hard drive (sexual pun intended ! haha !) and lots of RAM it isn't needed as often, and I forgot how to defragment myself. You should occasionally delete your temporary internet files, as they chew up RAM. You should have anti-spyware software - I think mine runs automatically every night at 2AM.

Some people have told me that Norton anti-virus only covers about 75% of viruses and that other supplementary virus protection is wise, but I don't know which one to recommend.

eventually they will get you....

i run 4 different firewalls, but i was toying with the idea of getting a router to hide behind as well, and host of different virus and trojan hunters.

No explorer ,outlook or messenger on my system.

And i backup my system every month.

I can’t afford to let in one of those ba$tards to get in (to paraphrase a quote from Aliens).


And, to cap it all i also run an emulated (virtual) Amiga OS to fool any hackers out there.

But as i said all this is no guarantee.

3 firewalls and a router with its own firewall i do have msn however and i have been hit by adware but i use anti spyware software and not had any for a long time. i never defrag although i probs should and erm ye well its good enough

Who ever told you norton only covering 75% of the viruses is a dumb ass. They are the highest ranking anti virus software out there, 100% detection rate and 100% removal rate. Mcfee antivirus is also 100% detection and 100% removal just that norton has more features than mcfee.

MM6 you have the best anti virus software out there on the market. Pretty much a firewall and anti spyware is all you are going to really need. For the anti spyware I recommend spysweeper by webroot software and for the fire wall I recommend zonealarm.

it could be argued that Nortons is only useful if you update regularly.
And, until, they write a new solution to a new virus then the software is almost 100% useless.

I run XP and also use messenger.

I have Norton personal firewall and I just checked and I have lavasoft Ad-Aware SE personal which someone at BT told me about when my broadband went stupid. Its updates were 200 days old ......so I m updating it now.....

Norton only ever found one virus which was trojan byte verify which it killed.

MM, set up NAV to autoupdate automatically - I assume you're on broadband so always connected - it should run whenever you're connected to the net, and it'll pick up updates as soon as Symantec issue them... it'll just download and install in the background. Don't know how old your comp and therefore your software is, but it's worth being sure you have the latest version of NAV - you can then subscribe each year to the autoupdates... it prompts you...

Well, those "dumbasses" were from ComputerGeeks, and they are a large company that fix people's computers for a living. If you think you have 100% detection and removal rate is even possible when imaginative hackers are constantly inventing new ones, then good luck to you.

Do you know what the requirements are to become a computergeek? They are not very high. First off what I was talking about was the 100% detection rate and 100% removal rate of known viruses, trojans and so forth(except adware and spyware).

Again those people at computer geeks don't know what they are talking about at all. In fact ask anyone of them which processor or video card or memory is better and why it is better, they won't tell you why, they will just till you a name of company and say it is better.

Yes new viruses are constantly coming out but when norton and mcfee update there definitions they make sure it can also be deleted. So guess what they have a 100% detection and removal rate of known viruses.

MM6 you might want to redownload the lavasoft adaware se personal program. If the definitions were indeed 200 days old than chances are that the program itself is also outdated. You are also going to want to download spybot search and destroy too.

I have XP and run norton, and once a week run adware se, and spybot search and destroy, and registry vac, and CWShredder. and I go to "clean disk" daily as many temp files stay in there and it cleans them out. My gf is a 30+ years IT tech and that is what she tells me to do and I never have problems, and OH yeah ! I use a firewall also. If anybody would like to know where to get these things for free just go to www.download.com and they have many things for free and it's a safe site.

I just downloaded spybot and ran it and it found 4 things wrong and fixed them. I have set NAV to run twice weekly. I dont know where the clean disc bit is?

First off to get to your disk clean up click on your "start" button and then go to "all programs" and when it comes up go to "accessories" and then "system tools" and then click on "Disk Clean Up". It will bring up a window asking you to click "OK" to clean your "C" drive. Click on "OK" and it will take a few minutes to do and then another window will come up showing you how much space you will get by cleaning. Check all the boxes as you don't need any of those files and then click "OK" again and it will clean all your uneeded files. I do this once a day to keep it clean. As far as reg vac goes you can get it at www.regvac.com for free. After you load it use it in the novice mode and it will safely clean your registry of all garbage.
