Tampons and my daughter

My daughter who is 12 is having trouble using tampons, and has an active life. she asked me whether i would show her how to use them by inserting one my self. would this be an appropriate way of showing her??

Just my practical opinion (I don't have a daughter, but I have had lots of tampons):

I don't think my mother showing me how to use a tampon would've helped me any. A mother's vagina is very different to a young girl's, and it's not like there's an obvious knack that she'll see when you do it, as there's a lot of internal manoeuvring going on. If you wanted to try anyway and you're physically open with your daughter already, I don't suppose seeing her mother do that would harm a well-adjusted girl too much. If you don't routinely go in for that level of openness, she may find it alarming. It would certainly be an image that would've stayed with me, I think!

I thought I'd do my good deed for the day and come up with a more helpful suggestion. Anyway, it turns out a Google search for tampon "how to insert" returns a very helpful set of links, one of which is a link to Tampax's website containg a helpful instruction video (cartoon diagram, hence clean and has internal view). I've just watched it myself (can't hurt to brush up on technique ) and if she can't follow that and the accompanying page, she's probably not ready for tampons.

i think that it would be fine to show your daughter, your vagina and show her how to use tampons that way, it worked for me, especially when she walked in on me inserting a tampon. it will also give you a chance to bond "girl to girl"

Close yes but never to this degree as my mum was always something of a prude.

Karren are you thinking about stripping and going nude for your daughter, and showing her how to use a tampon, i say go for it, a direct approach. you have some guts. go girl

Okay enough said ... this is gross.

Can't your daughter read? Surely 'how to' instruction are on the box? Can't see it being a difficult operation - she's only shoving a lump of glorified cotton wool up her crack. What will she do when she really faces a difficult situation such as opening a tin of beans?

Inserting a tampon for the first time is as difficult as it gets, especially to a scared 12 year old learning all about her body.

Why not (if you can't face it yourself) take her to your local well woman clinic, I remember my mum took me to my wonderful GP who was very supportive ........ though I never became comfortable with tampons - hurrah for Thong pads I say

Try using Tampax Applicator Tampons... they come with this applicator so you dont have to put your fingers up your vagina and get them all bloody and gross!!! They're soooooooo easy to use... success for me second time i tried. I know it always says this on the instructions, but it is truly so important - relaxing is ESSENTIAL. Remember to take a deep breath in and out a couple times and then go for it, because the reason it didn't work for me the first time was because i skipped the step of relaxing...i was all like 'yeah whatever' and it just wouldn't go in. Also, try squatting and using a small mirror to guide yourself, and have the instructions handy. Tampax are seriously great. I'd die without them!! Be paitent, once you get it you'll see it's easy and wonder why you never could.

im 15 and the thought of my mum showing me on her self is just sickening !!! it would scar me for life.

buy her a box of tampax pearl,the applicators are smooth and small and it comes with an instruction packet.Or just let her use pads until she is comfortable inserting tampons.
