hmm...well from the reviews I've read it's quite good and cheap. There were few problems though (before 2002/pre-facelift)....and so alot of cars were recalled (turbine or other parts of engine defect...). Still, I'd say that it's a good car.
You should read more reviews though.

What do you think of the no clutch idea? do you think the gear box will break easy?

better check this link http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/new-cars/first-look-2006-smart-fortwo-406/index.htm

haven't heard of problems with the gearbox breaking...

Every car it's pros & cons. This car being that small and having so small rear (& front) axle isn't really stable (on turns etc...), the response isn't quite good...
The main pro is it's size

Darn as i'm checking my posts i'm contradicting myself. It's a ~ok car, but better check it out (test drive, ask around...)

all modern cars are quite reliable unless you're abusing them, eg you are holding low gear at high speed all day; or never change engine oil, etc.

each model of car has its intended usage by design and their drive-train are set up accordingly for that usage. it takes compatible driving style and traffic conditions to better the set-up. most city cars including the smart are not intended to be driven hard, they are not meant to run quick. if you don't realise this and revv the car too hard then engine may run into trouble cooking itself; then again you should only end-up a bigger service bill and a break down shouldn't happen if you service your car regularly (notwithstanding you've got a lemon).

if you think you are a paranoid, you should use auto mode and let the computer take over.
