Wall paper management software...

Postby cosmicB on Sat Jun 24, 2006 6:58 am

I just noticed with "Subdesktop", you can click on the "show desktop" icon.. and you lose the "subdesktop" logo at the top of the screen... So instead of your computer being labeled subdesktop at the top of the screen.. it's yours again, with no other-people labels...

I use "Subdesktop" with "WinWall"... Two interesting and useful little pieces of software that make my machine a little more mine...

You can set WinWall to auto-change your wallpaper, every minute.. or two.. or manually change pix.. you choose...
WinWall is also a bit of a picture editor...

With "Tiny Personal Firewall", I block WinWall's irritating persistent little url connect...

The thing is.. Put a little life into your computer.. and it's likely it will give some back...

For "life in the computer", I'd like the option of right clicking.. choosing "Sting".. and when I click the mouse, the cursor changes to a stinging scorpion...

Or there might be times I want it to change into a tiny metallic red sword... Or maybe a floaty-feather...
Or the swipe of a panther's bladed paw...
Or if something in my inbox is ugly, I might want the cursor to change to a toilet.. with generous audio... like I wish the "emptying the trash" would sound like a john flushing... and when there's a lot to empty, it would sound pluggedish and spilling over..

There are several softwares, in Majorgeeks downloads, which modify desktop wallpaper...

I recently downloaded and installed "Acronis True Image".. and suddenly the PC is running faster, and file handling is working like I never knew it could...

Now, in "My Documents", the moment the mouse cursor touches a file title, up comes the preview. in a second... This never happened with this PC...

Plus the latest Spybot updates removed 13 strange registry entries...

If your machine has about 50-megs of spare usable space, try a download and install of "True Image"... It might boost your PC's efficiency...

If you really want to clean out the crap that's slowing down your PC, download and run "Easy Cleaner"..
Be careful with it... Some folks have problems with it... Experts swear by it...

I just stumbled upon it a few minutes ago, and it made this ole antique clunker run even better and faster, without any problems... Restart after the cleanup...
You might get a freeze up after a serious clean.. just restart...
You use this at your own risk... If you have any software contradictions, like running ZoneAlarm with Norton, it might cause some light troubles that reinstalls should fix... Careful!.. It's a very Powerful tool...
You would probably be best to avoid the "duplicates" cleaner... That could cause a lot of problems if used wrong...

You gonna love this one...

Also try "CM DiskCleaner"...

*EasyCleaner and CMDiskCleaner didn't work properly when I installed them from a CD I had saved them on, from downloading them off the Net...

If you want to be UP on all the websites that ring true for you, as they come out on the Net.. Go to "Google Alerts"...

http://www.google.com/alerts

Set up alerts for everything that interests you...

Don't forget the quotes ('' '') around every multiword-Alert, or you will get tons of stuff you don't want...
This "Google Alerts" thing is like being in school and having your textbooks custom written for you...

I call this "Google Alert" stuff, state of the art Internet luxury...

Computer art:

http://www.imagesavant.com/type3.html

Right click a little pix... Left click the big pix.. Release the click at "save image"... Open it from your desktop... Save it in My Documents Pix folder...
Run WinWall, and search for all>MyDocs>Pix>Close>List options>Save...

A lot on your Internet security and privacy...

http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/main-nf.htm

Before installing a new security software, ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS check it out on the Net, for what folks are saying about it... Type the software name, and add "forum" to it... Or add to the name "is good", and/or "is shid"... People will be talking about it...

Always make a fresh registry backup before installing...

Regisrty Fun

Postby cosmicB on Tue Aug 01, 2006 4:24 am

I'm making an effort to learn the basics of the W98se registry, so I can do my computer repairs myself...

Sometimes I makes stupid errors, but it's usually easy to correct by applying a registry backup, which sets it all back to what it was before I started messing in the registry...

One example of why one needs to modify the registry... Say you've uninstalled some unwanted software, and it took out your documents thumb pix previews.. or a registry cleaner software removed something it shouldn't have... What do you do to get previews back?.. Maybe the registry cleaner's undo will fix it.. maybe not..?

The computer repair shop will likely charge you 50-bucks to fix it... On top of that you must disconnect the tower, and deliver it to the shop, and wait a few days to a week, then pick up your repaired tower, pay the piper, take it home, and hook it all back up... A wasted half a day, or more.. plus the 50-bucks, the disconnecting everything, delivery, pickup, and reinstalling it all back into a working unit...

An alternative is to surf the Web for your problem...
In this case I surfed "lost documents thumb previews"... and I stumbled into a webpage that had a download called "thumbnail fix"... I downloaded it, and placed it on the desktop in a word file, then went into Run.. Regedit.. Registry tab.. Import.. and the new file I had just downloaded came up, and I added it to the registry...

I clicked on "My Documents", and my pix file.. and when the mouse cursor touched a pix title, up came the instant thumbnail preview... It was that easy...

This is the file I added to the registry to repair thumb pix previews:

REGEDIT4

..and suddenly thumb previews was working again...

The big thing about the registry is that when your PC catches a bug, it sets registry keys that mess-up how segments of your PC runs, or doesn't run... Generally a bug is a set of registry keys designed to disrupt your PC's registry so bad that the computer just won't work anymore...
If you have a clean registry backup, you can restore the registry to that backup, thereby deleting the bug's registry entries.. and after running a few cleanup softwares, your machine is running back to as it was before it caught the bug... That's what AVS, Anti-Spyware, firewalls, and registry cleanup software, does for you... They try to prevent those bugs from taking-hold by blocking them, and have features to delete bugs that got in... sometimes... but some evolved-bugs can't be deleted...

It is very important to learn how to establish a clean registry, and to create a registry backup, and to know how to apply it...
Learn that, and it will save you a lot of money and needless grief...

If you really want to see what is running in your computer, download and run these two little freebie softwares...

You will be amazed.. and probably shocked too...

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

______________

CAUTION: Belarc might be an open backdoor, and an American or British Intel data collecting agent... Avoid little helper softwares that need to Net connect to function...

Three freshly loaded spare hd's serious got hack trashed, only After I installed Belarc... So I formated and reloaded all three...

The hd that had no pix, Belarc did its scan thing fast, but the fresh hd with 16 megs of pix and files, Belarc seemed to spend the same time scanning as it took to load those files from CD into the computer...
I am boycotting Belarc now, as a just in case.. for the next hundred years...

Custom Cursors to liven up your desktop...

Postby cosmicB on Fri Aug 18, 2006 4:34 am

Have you ever wanted a sword cursor..? or a dragon cursor?.. or a unicorn, a shark, a planet, a fantasy creature, an anything..?

It's here: http://gallery.popularscreensavers.com/index.jsp?catid=17&

Finally I've got my sword cursor...

_______________________

CORRECTION:

WARNING!.. I ran Spybot after downloading from that website, and downloading this cutie little sword cursor.. and Spybot found 90 new malware entries, and deleted them.. and I lost my little sword... oh sigh.. and poop & darn!

It took Spybot's second deep-scan nearly an hour to run through my PC's 41000 files...

So the next thing I must do, is apply my previous registry backup, to enure my PC is back as it was before I trusted someone I shouldn't have... I hate when that happens!.. It makes me feel "raped"...

Heck!.. I'm just gonna format-C, to be sure I've cleaned all that mess out... I hate when that happens... You trust somebody, and your PC's OS gets damaged

________________

So I sent them an email, bitching about their 90 thingamubobs, and they replies, tellin' me "that they aren't malwares, they're just parts of pix"...
Yah right...

________________

Now.. I don't know what to believe... except my Wick-ed AttitudE for survival.. that any software the I find, that attaches crap in my PC, I boycott for the next hundred years... Bottom-line is that those people I find associated with bullying me, and/or messing in my PC, will NEVER see a single penny from my paypal account!.. I think they'll understand that...

UPDATING W98se DRIVERS...

Drivers are like little engines in your PC...

Insert your Windows98se CD into the CD drive...

START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>SYSTEM>DEVICE MANAGER>DRIVER>+>double click the driver info line>UPDATE DRIVER...

Do it for each one... Some will update.. Some will keep the driver that's already installed...

Reboot after each install...

If you can't update drivers because Windows doesn't know that site, or if it's not a trusted site to the antique 98 system.. go to IE>TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS>SECURITY>double click TRUSTED SITES>SITES>uncheck require server verification...

When you're finished updating drivers, go back and click check On, "require server verification"...

REBOOT, run your cleaners, scandisk, and defrag...

Are you fed up with spending lots of dollars on PC cleaners?..

http://www.cmdiskcleaner.com/

Be careful running it... Don't just delete everything the registry cleaner finds... Know what you are deleting, or don't delete it...

EasyCleaner is safe to delete everything it finds...
