One of my spare hard drives was making weird whining sounds when I saved pix editing... I ran scandisk surface scan, and the whining vanished...
I'm guessing that the hard drive had to run over a bad cluster(s), is probably why it made the whining sounds... The surface scan quarantined the bad clusters...

Cable internet connection fails, or slows down...

I discovered it might be the fact that I'm running a "Linksys wireless router" off the cable modem.. with the HP notebook connected wireless, and the Mac and Desktop PC hardwired to the router... I'm supposing the modem is taking a jumble of signals.. and is just "passing-out from confusion, and or internal exhaustion..?

Probably the cable modem need be evolved to handle simultaneous dual-type connections..? But maybe it's the router too..? Who knows?.. maybe just a tiny cap and resistor in the right place will fix it..?

Restore your connection by unplugging everything from the modem, and the PC fully Off... and let it all wait for about twenty seconds before plugging anything in...

Back in the prehistoric-days of the first transistor remote tv's, they would lockup a lot... Unplugging usually fixed 'em...

Given that dust is the PC killer.. maybe it's time you took your machine into a shop, to get them to do a proper cleaning inside the tower..?

Or do it yourself if you are adept in handling electronics hardware...

For sure you would want to use some gentle high-pressure air to blow the dust away from fan bearings...

I use a shop air-compressor.. and sometimes one of those aerosol cans of pressurized gas for cleaning hard to get at fine-parts...

Never ever sweep the floor, nor dust the house, with the PC On...
When you are finished the house cleaning, use a strong fan to flow-through blow the airborne dust out of the house, for about five minutes, before switching On the computer... This way the PC's cooling-fans don't suck-in a lot of dirt.. and your puppy lasts a few years longer than it would if you abused it with dust... This goes for all electronics... Cover those things, before you raise a micro dust-storm... They'll last a lot longer...

Maybe there's a way to tape-on some fine filter material to the outside of the tower's air intakes..?
Too fine, and the fans wouldn't cool properly...
Quality computers would have replaceable filters, and plugged-filter screen-warnings...

An interesting highly-recommended download site... found in "WebPro Wire" website, which is about as honest as the system gets...

Yo Princess JJ

This ole tower is antique, and is running super.. better than the neighbor's new media notebook, with its elite OS mess...
I have zero probs with this ole 98se...
She wishes she never bought the notebook...

I added all state of the art hardware to an antique tower.. and stripped out as much of the useless parts of the OS and programs as I could figure is safe to delete...
Runs like a sports model tank, with all its shielding removed...

The secret to keeping this thing prime, is to follow the new developments of those diehard W98se systems writers... And open all suspect email and attachments only in the iMac... And keep a drawer-full of loaded hard drives... And a couple full boxes of old computer parts in the shed... and make backups a lot... and try to spend only a couple hours per day at the PC..

Maybe we should start a how to photo-edit thread...

Take one of those fractal pix, and steretch it out in your photo editor...

Ever work with FreeDOS-32 or any embedded OS?

I want to try assembling a pico-ITX motherboard with a radio tuner and DVD drive to create a versatile multimedia player that is small enough to fit into the dash of a car (replacing the factory installed CD player).

I am working on a CD player for the truck yesterday and today... It's on the seat, along with a lot of tiny tools... but I ain't about to go that far with it...

Sounds like what's done in turning old PC's into Sat. TV receivers...

I tried to work with micro embedded, but the components are too difficult to match up and find in these parts, and aren't built with any internal protections, which makes any slight mistake extremely costly...
And two sided soldering those super tiny chip's legs is a real bitch under a lens... I just can't get used to soldering ultra tiny ccts in these conditions... And these new state of the art soldering irons are just a huge pain in the butt... You might check out Micro's forum...

How far did you get into realizing your super state of the art car stereo?..
