School skirts

Postby skirty » Wed May 02, 2007 12:25 am

Why is it now days that most girls wear trousers to school, when I was at school in the late 80s we all wore skirts, these days you only see girls in either a tiny mini skirt or trousers. When i was at school we had no choice but to wear a skirt, it had to be black and at knee lenght or below. for the first 2 years most wore pleated but after every one wore a straight skirt. we used to compeat with each other on who could wear the tightest skirt, this was befor stretch skirts were about.

There was a time once at school in a textile class we had lesson in altering skirts, this i can remember it well. we wear made to put our PE stuff on, so we could use our skirts in the lesson, the teacher was teaching us how to repair zips and loose seams, but nearly all the girls did need there skirts repaired. my skirt the seam was coming away and the split and been repaired lads of times, but also i had lost a bit of wait, and my skirt was a bit bagie, my friend said i bet i can make my skirt ighter that yours, i said no you cant, but 5 other friends wanted to compeat, we asked our teacheris we could do it, see said no problem i will show you how.

I turned my straight skirt into a pencil skirt, but i sewed up the split as did my friends, also we sewed a peice of black lace to the seam to make it stronger.. I our haste to be cool i think i went over the top, i took in the seam bu 3 inches each side, as the class ended and we had to put our skirts back on. the i noticed what i had done. My skirt felt like i had wrapped umy legs in tape i could not move my knees apart at all, but could walk because my knees acted like my hip, my friends commented that my skirt was the tightest in the school and how cool i was. but it was me who had to wear it, but wear it i did, all that year i hobbled every where in it. but coz my mum worked i had to go to a friends house most nights there for i had to live in my skirt all day and i nw my mus could not affford a new skirt for school so i wore it all year tike this.

Now days girls would never do what girls did when i was at school. or do they?

I think that many girls now wear trousers to school because it is the fashion for them to wear them out of school and also so that the girls are not being discriminated against.

In my school we had to wear pleated skirts. It was the same uniform for everyone and it was just accepted.

Occasionally girls would make "unofficial" alterations to their skirts, sich as raising the hem line or hitching them up higher to make them look like mini-skirts, but this activity was frowned upon by the school, and girls were told to adjust their skirts back to normal. There were certainly no needlework classes were you could adjust your uniforms!

This is an interesting subject. Here in the U.S. it seems that most private schools like Catholic schools require skirts. Usually pleated a little above the knee like SaraJane wore. Public schools like where i went you could wear pretty much whatever you wanted which in the last few years including when i graduated ment pants and usually just jeans sometimes with rips in various places :( I was a follower so i always went with jeans or maybe once in a while a nice pair of pants. Same in college. So when i got into the work force i noticed more girls wearing skirts. I think that lead to my skirt problems bcause i didn't have any experience wearing them. Like how to sit correctly in a shorter skirt or how to keep it from blowing up in the wind. The 1st time i wore a short "floaty" skirt i was so shocked as 2 what happened i had no idea it would be that hard 2 control. I notice other girls my age also seem 2 have similar problems including my little sis (as posted elsewhere). She was all confident the time she borrowed my "kilty" skirt but going up the steps at the gym had no idea she could be upped by everyone else there  Her ability to hold her skirt down the time we went out together by the pier was also sadly lacking. So i think if more girls wore skirts to school they would get the practice needed 4 later plus the boys there would enjoy it more too :!:

When I was at school we were only allowed to wear a straight skirt in the last year, as this skirt style was thought to be unsuitable for young girls at the time. If you decided to wear a straight skirt, it had to be long enough to cover your knees when you sat down and you were not allowed to have a slit. (The skirts came from the shop with a knife pleat at the back, but we used to cut that out and close the back seam down to the hemline to make the skirt tighter, only to regret it later)

I don't remember having any problems at school in a straight skirt as all we had to do was walk around the school.
We always had to change for PE and it was a welcome break to get out of our tight skirts and stretch our legs. Our skirts were too long for boys to look up, they were also too tight to walk properly!
I was travelling to and from school and in the evenings that our straight skirts became a problem. There was no school run in those days, you ether had to walk, bus or cycle to school.
It took ages for me to walk anywhere in my school skirt, getting on a bus was also a problem as its high platform was not designed for tight skirts, you either had to hitch them up or grab the pole and hop on.
I never felt safe cycling in a straight skirt, the step-through frame on my bike was not low enough and the hemline of the skirt would catch over the frame when I stood astride it.
The evenings were the worst when we meet the boys in the park after school, my mother would not let me change as she did not want me to ruin my best skirts.
My tight skirt excluded me from many activities, I remember being unable to ride one of the boy's new racing bikes because of my skirt prevented me from getting on it.
Looking back on it now I can't believe that we wore these tight skirts all the time.

I was telling my little sis who is in 10th grade about this. She says no one at her school ever wears nice skirts...only jeans or some other type of pants. Occasionaly she will see someone wearing a denim short skirt...usually with the threads hanging from the bottom :( But never with any hose. So we decided that she and her gf would try 1 day next week 2 wear nice skirts 2 school complete with medium heels, pantyhose...the works just 2 see what the reaction will be. And also 2 see what problems come with it. Nothing 2 short so as 2 get them kicked out or anything. My sis is going to borrow again my "kilty" skirt that she wore to the basketball game that time. I don't know what her gf is going 2 wear. Either i will or i will have her report back directly after.

I wish them luck, buffy. Since bare legs are so much in style, they may not get the compliments they deserve.

We decided last nite that my sis's gf will go with bare legs 2 see if the reaction is any different. No tight or pencil skirt. She doesn't have one an neither do we. The look we are going 4 is more like what girls wear at private schools every day. Plad skirts, black shoes with either very low heels of flats, and knee socks. My sis wants to try the hose to see if the difference is noticed or reaction. Remember my sis writes for her school newspaper (as mentioned in a different thread). She is a junior editor. So she talked to her teacher about doing an article on dress in highschools and her experience in varying from the norm. He was all in favor if it. :D So we decided that next Monday will b the day.

That would be an interesting article. I'd like to have her post it when she's done.
