shaved heads for little boys ?

A friend of mine has two little boys aged 7 and 5 years old. In July when it was really hot, she took them both to have their heads shaved all over with the clippers on a number one guard which is really short !

She has kept their hair this length since then and takes them to have it done about every two to three weeks, even now it is winter and obviously much colder than it was in the summer.

She says the boys are happy to keep it very short, it is easy to look after and they do look cute. My little boy is only six months old so has not had his first hair cut yet but I am wondering about bringing him up with very close cropped hair.

Has anyone brought their son(s) up with their hair like this and if so, would you advise it ?

Dont understand why it matters what a kids hair is like. do what you like with it until hes old enough to tell you different?

i think to project the work 'thug' onto a small child because of their haircut is a tad ott and stereotypical.

Personally I dislike men, especially little boys with their heads shaved, although I do think it's sensible to keep their hair short. However, I bet it kept them far cooler and more comfortable than me in the summer!

i have two sons 6 and 4 and i have to say since the age of 2/3 i started to shave my boys heads.but the only time and reason i did this was summer their lill heads would sweat under caps.so i decided to do it.my hubby went mad but got to like it eventually.in the winter i grow the top of their hair and have cropped round the sides wich looks cute too.i dont feel its any biggy.do what you feels right.

A shaved head is nothing but a hair style. Many men have shaved heads today, and it is very stylish. So why not little boys? The hair can be allowed to grow back, it is not a life or death situation.

Who knows, shaved heads may become popular for boys if more boys start doing it!

My son is 10 and had a Grade One cut all over his head last summer. Since Autumn, he (and many of his peers) have grown their hair and it is currently quite long. In common with many other boys, my son plays football, runs, is generally active and often gets dirty as a result. He also swims frequently. During the summer his hair required 'zero maintenance' which is not the case now that it is much longer. From a cleanliness and tidyness perspective, it was much easier last summer than it is now. Although we have some boundaries, my wife and I believe that his choice of hairstyle should be his (as long as it doesn't break any rules or prevent him or our family from doing anything). However, I really hope he chooses to have it cut very short again soon.

Whilst these are positive, practical reasons for boys having short hair, I do acknowledge the stereotypes that some people associate with such a hairstyle (which have been noted on this board). I believe that, perhaps, we all need to learn to look beyond immediate appearance and the behaviour sometimes associated with it a little more often. Last summer, we went on holiday with another family. Both dads and both lads wear ear rings or studs, had shaved/short hair and spent most of the week without shirts as the weather was so glorious. Although I can appreciate that we may have adopted a certain 'look', none of us are thugs and we didn't behave as such.

I don't think it's a particularly nice "look" for children at all. Grown men, fine, as long as they have the bone structure for it (low foreheads and high cheekbones help ). But not little boys, no way.

I agree with Civetta. Plus hair is nature's way of protecting children's heads from overheating or getting sunburned in the absence of baseball caps...

Would have thought let it grow back for a while, as continus shaving
might cause the hair to be like a wire brush!

Personally it makes me sad to see little boys strutting around like identical skinhead thugs. A friend of mine has a son aged 7 who has and wants to have his hair like that and when I asked her why she said that if he had longer hair he would be bullied at school. How did we get to the stage where litle boys have to prove that they are "hard"?

1. Hair is there for a purpose, ESPECIALLY in summer. It keeps the head from getting sunburned, and exceptionally, overheated. Kids can't (or won't) wear caps all the time and a sunburned scalp can be quite nasty.

2. A 10 year old boy has just been suspended from school in my town because his mother shaved his head. She said it was because of head lice, but it sounds like an excuse.

3. And yes, Jean94, it does make them look like identical skinhead thugs.

There is no real problem with it. Lots of the ex-military men I know do, lots of my son's friends have at one point or another and my eldest two have tried it out. But I would not force it upon your kids.
