My 14 year old daughter’s friend has very strict parents who still insist she wears white knee socks to school. Most girls in her year wear tights. Year 7 & 8 girls sometimes wear knee socks but the majority of them wear tights. The girls gets teased a bit for still wearing socks.

She usually wears skirts and dresses at the weekend as well as apparently is not allowed to wear jeans. I have met her mother a few times and she comes across as quite dominant and her daugher is quite the opposite.

Should I say anything to the mother or keep my mouth shut. Just wondered if anyone else has come across this?

I started wearing white knee socks again a few weeks ago. I was visiting my friend who rarely wears tights and when I laddered mine and sihad to borrow a pair of her socks. I was self-conscious about wearing them at first but every one was so used to my friend wearing them that no one noticed me so after a while I didn't mind.

Whilst I was wearing them I realised I found them were more comfortable than tights and decided to try them at school the next day. A few people noticed but nothing was said to make me uncomfortable wearing them. The next day I had to wear tights but asked my mother to get me some socks for school.

And so at 14 I have gone back to wearing white knee socks at school for the first time in about 4 years.

When I was at school in the 1970s we mostly wore white knee socks but the thing that got us into most trouble was wearing knee socks down at your ankles rather than pulled up and two teachers in particular used to yell and shout at you if they saw this.

Another thing that was fashionable was wearing socks on top of tights with the socks turned down to your ankles. Not a fashion I went for myself but some girls did. In fact a girl in my year got the slipper for it once after arguing about it with one of our teachers.

Kids today, they don't know they're born eh!!

It probably stopped her that day but she wasn't a girl who took much notice of rules so I'm sure it didn't stop her completely!
