Looked at the John Lewis website. Are these the items you have purchased for your daughter?

I think she will be delighted with what you have chosen her. Perhaps you should go for T-bar shoes, white socks and put her hair in bunches while you’re about it. Poor girl!

LET HER WEAR tights TO SCHOOL (heather liverpool)

Her socks wil be grey, knee length in the winter and white ankle in the summer. She is 15 this year. As she used to wear skirts (with tights) and trousers, she isn't happy about her new uniform. However, the school are happy for her to wear a pinafore, especially as she won't be able to roll it up like a skirt. We've decided on tights as we want to understand she is there to study, and not be on a fashion parade. We can't see why she can't wear socks rather than tights. Buildings are heated prperly these days and she has long coat for the winter.

Socks and pinafore

She's more bothered about the pinafore than the tights, but is resigned to it as a few of her friends will be wearing the same.
The pinafores are actually:

rather than the other one (which I agree looks like a little girls dress).
They look OK on, and don't make her look like a little girl.

School Pinafore

At £18 I think you are getting a bargain for something that is well made and durable. Those dresses should last her for the next two years. I would agree that they aren’t the trendiest of garments, but if some of her friends are also wearing them she won’t feel out of place which I many posters feel. Grey socks will complement the outfit very well and won’t look babyish as white knee high socks would. It will reflect the fact that she is an older child and is far more appropriate than nylon tights which ought to be the reserve of adults. Will her friends with pinafores be wearing socks or tights

John Lewis are also selling 1 style of summer gingham dresses up to size aged 16.

I have noto seen this size before, the largest I ever saw when buyng them was age 12/13.

I wonder if older girls are now sometimes being put into summer dresses?

How wonderful! Schoolgirls look lovely in summer gingham dresses and if John Lewis are selling these for girls of 16 then there must be a demand. These dresses look especially nice with white socks, particularly white ankle socks in the summer months, worn with flat heel shoes or sandals.

My daughter will be starting back at school next week and will wearing white knee socks as part of her uniform. She will be 16 the week after the start of term.

hi, is this your daughter's own choice of wearing white knee socks?

I decide that my daughter attends school in socks which she wears with black ballerina flats. The school demands girls wear a dark blue box pleated skirt and white shirt and tie with dark blue blazer but girls in Year 11 are allowed to wear black tights instead of socks. My daughter is not the only girl in socks and I suspect there will be about ten others wearing them. She does not mind wearing socks rather than tights.

My daughter is 15 (will be 16 in September) and still wears white socks for school - white knee socks in the winter and white ankle socks in the summer. I certainly do not think 14 or 15 is too old for a girl to be still wearing socks. I wore them for school until I was 16 and I plan to keep my daughter in them until this age. Parents have every right to decide on how their children should be dressed.

Does she wear socks when not at school? Are you keeping her in socks just for the next few weeks (until her 16th birthday) or for the whole school year?

Socks in Year 11

I support your decision to make your daughter continue wear socks to school. The concession to allow year 11 pupils to wear tights is something you as the parent have the right to exercise and not for your daughter to claim it is her entitlement. She should remain in socks as long as you feel is appropriate.

Am I correct in saying that if your daughter asked for tights you would refuse, and also if she was found wearing tights without your permission would you punish her and how?

I am surprised your daughter’s school allows ballerina flats, because I know some schools consider them unsuitable as they don’t offer adequate support compared to other types of shoes.

The attached link has a news story about such shoes being banned.

I dont agree with this last comment about punishing the girl for wearing tights behined her mothers back. when the winter comes she my feel the cold more than others and needs more leg protection I am sure you would buy them for her if she asked you then she doesnt need to go behined you back to wear tights

My daughter in white socks

Postby Elenwhit on Thu Sep 04, 2008 2:13 pm

Up to her fifteenth birthday I kept my daughter in white socks all the time except on very cold days when I dressed her in thick white ribbed tights. After her fifteenth birthday she has remained in white socks both for school and elsewhere but I have occasionally allowed her tights as a treat for special events such as attending a wedding or a family gathering but never for school.

She will continue to wear white socks for school for the whole of Year 11 and I intend that she will do so out of school as well. She will be allowed tights on more frequent occasions than during the last year but this will depend on her behaviour so that she continues to realise that wearing tights is a privilege and not an automatic right. She will wear tights when she enters Year 12, both for school and outside.
