Got any pics to post Footman? Maybe if more people see it, and can stare at that sort of thing for awhile, it might seem less odd. That's the only way for it to be accepted.

The only reason it's thought to be "gay" on a guy, is because it's seen as a a "girl thing", and the only reason for that is that guys just don't do it (on the whole). However, if both did it all the time, it would be no different then women wearing pants, guys with long hair or ear rings, or now, guys wearing sandals.

Of course, that last one is probably the key. Guys generally aren't interested in dolling themelves up, and that plays into it, I'm sure, but.... that's changing, it can look good, and if a guy is going to do the healthy (and cool) thing of wearing open shoes, then he certainly should take the effort to "dress" that area up, and just get past this whole notion of "makeup". It ought to be no different than picking out a pair of shoes that match, or putting effort into style and fashion.

I'll stop before I ramble too bad. lol

Also FM, are you single, or married? Just curious. It seems the married guys have the most freedom to do it (for obvious reasons), but I'm curious about the experiences of single, straight guys. Not that it really matters, as long as more guys are doing it, regardless of marital status, it'll help push the acceptance. :)

it's quite obvious that guys who don't paint their toe nails are going to call other guys who do gay.. it's just pathetic.

Really...... ? Hmm.

So then what you're sayuing is, someone dressed in a studded leather jacket, orange and blue hair in giant 12 inch spikes, a safety pin through their cheek, isn't likely to be a punk rocker? And you would never assume them to be?

What about someone dressed as a vampire, or Lilly Munster, black hair, black nails, pale skin, perhaps some sheer net clothing, spiked chokers, etc, at night, in a city, in the summer. You'd think they weren't likely to be goths?

Long hair (on a guy), jeans, biker or combat boots, leather biker jacket (or denim jacket with band patches), and a metal band t-shirt. Not a metal head, right?

Clothes and accessories ARE a label. One we apply to ourselves. They DO say something about who we are. It's a fact. Get over it.

Also, it's worth pointing out that that tired, trite phrase was coined in the distant past, when books all had boring basic covers. At the time, one could not judge a book to be boring because of it's cover, when it could be a really interesting story, or valuable bit of history trapped in there. (To say nothing of earlier examples of books that might have no cover (scrolls), or be mis-labled, or whatnot) It's out of date today, and mis-used everywhere.

It's unfortunate, but it's natural. Nature is hardly pathetic.

Society has, over time, gotten ideals about which gender does what. People who go against that are seen as very odd, to say the least. It's absolutely no surprise that guys who never considered the idea would reflexively think it was gay, and that other guys who did it were gay.

It's not until they see many guys doing it that they know not to be gay that they will get past that. And it's not until they get past that, that they will be able to see that, if done right (IOW - in a masculine way) it can actually look good.

The only way for that to happen is for more guys to just start doing it, and doing it more often. Start desensitising people. It will be a long slow process. And the people who *really* need to be convinced that it's ok for guys to do it, and actually can look good, are not other guys. It's women. As long as women are turned off by it, guys won't do it, and it'll never take off. And many women are just like guys - put off by things that "break the rules", because they don't ever see it done and it's just too weird to them as a result. (which is to say, if they grew up with it, it would be an accepted fact of life and really no big deal at all, and in all probability, if they grew up with it in the right context, they would prefer it)

I paint my toenails

Postby conal cochran » Sat Jun 24, 2006 3:36 pm

I paint my toenails and am not gay. If I saw someone who looked totally "punk rock", then I'd think they looked punk rock. This is quite a different scenario than someone completely writing me off as gay with the sight of just my toes.

That's fine, though. One of the reasons I paint my toenails is so that the people who either can't deal with it, or are ignorant enough to label me gay, stay the hell away from me. I consider myself a handsome, straight, metropolitan man and am quite secure in my masculinity. And any person, be it a potential girlfriend or just a stranger in a store, that can't handle/appreciate uniqueness and a little rebellion, doesn't belong anywhere near me. These people are slow-minded, overly-conservative, ignorant hilljacks who know nothing other than the small world they were raised in. This is why our little friend here, in the post above mine, can't wrap his little mind around the fact that simply painting your toenails is not, in fact, a direct indicator that a person is gay.

Hell, nowadays, straight males are bending the gender fashion rules to such an extent that actual gays are losing their fashion identity! I'm not sure we'll ever see a society where large amounts of men wear stilletto heels and dresses and makeup, but people....If you can't handle a guy painting his toes, (especially if it is in a semi-masculine color) then not only do you have a lot of growing up to do, but you're growing into a world that will reject you as well. You will either choose to tolerate things like this as the norm, or you will have to banish yourselves to much more rural, undeveloped areas, where ignorance is the way of life.

What an idiot. Really no surprise that he's a liberal too.

Learn to read dude. I know it's hard to focus through all your blind moronic rage, so maybe try taking some yoga and chilling out. The hard part is accepting what reality is. That's why you lean the way you do, because you can't. And that leads to what we have here.

Here, let me re-post the relevant sections for you, sort take you by the hand and walk you through it -
"It's unfortunate, but it's natural. Nature is hardly pathetic."

You see, that shows that I realize that it has it's drawbacks, and is not always a pleasant situation, but, I have enough capability for rational thought to see things for what they are and accept that. It's part of the scientific method, when observing, one must be honest and objective.

"if done right it can actually look good."

This shows that, well, that I agree with it being done and recognize that it can actually look _good_. Hard to see how that could possibly be missed or mean anything else. But then, I guess I shouldn't be surprised by people anymore.

"Clothes and accessories ARE a label. One we apply to ourselves. They DO say something about who we are. It's a fact. Get over it."

Speaks for itself and is obvious. But yet, somehow, you still managed to take it the wrong way. Clearly you're a little defensive over the whole issue. Which means you're not really secure in it.

Once again, clothes ARE a label that we apply to ourselves. They DO say a lot about you - what your interests are, how seriously you take yourself, if you have taste when it comes to clothes, how much money you have, if you are shy, if you care about your appearance.... everything.

Things are not always accurately portrayed, but as we can see here, even the blatant written word isn't always understood clearly.

Bottom line however, is that society will do what society will do, regardless of how indignant you get about it. If you are comfortable blowing everyone off because you'd rather do something odd, go right ahead, nobody's stopping you. Although, with your attitude, you will push people away that aren't really going to be put off by your habits. It will be self fulfilling prophecy.

On the flip side, you may just be doing the rest of us a favor, because only be people doing it will it descensitize everyone else to the point of making it acceptable. So please do continue.

Oh, and here's the part I love most - just in case you think that your lack of security and over sensitivity about the issue won't actually get in your way - not only did it make you unable to understand my post, I actually have painted my nails. It's how I came to realize it can look good on a guy if done the right way. And I would like for it to be more common. And when I go in for a pedicure, if the girl brings it up I'll let her do whatever she wants, even if it's adding color. Hell, that would actually be pretty cool.

I know I know - If I like it and want to do it, why not just do it? Well, as it turns out, I actually like them buffed more than colored. So since it's still quite socially unacceptable, and I only sorta like it, why bother? I'll just stick to the buffing that I like better. ;)

I have gone for both a manicure and a pedicure. I have also had the color, and or the buffed look. I will usually let them color my toe nails but not my finger nails. I have them buff them and I add the color when I get home.

It's a wonderful feeling getting pampered like this I think that more guys should try it.

He wouldn't.

Only a gay man would.

Male rock stars don't count because they only do it for the show.

Only a repressed homosexual would say something like that, have you got a secret to tell ?, I think you protest too much

I agree!

Usually when you find someone who is so "narrow minded" to say that "..only a gay man would paint his nails", they are either "homophobic", or don't want to admit that they actually want to do this.

There is nothing wrong with men who paint their nails. Just because they choose to do this, doesn't mean anything except that they want to paint their nails!

Today, many men are concerned with their appearance. There are those who wear makeup, shave their bodies, wear jewelry (necklace, bracelet, rings, watch, earrings), wear kilts/skirts, color their hair, tan, etc. Just because a man chooses to do these things, doesn't make him gay! What about women who wear pants/slacks? Those who cut their hair short? Those who choose not to wear makeup? Those who choose NOT to paint their nails? Those who choose NOT to wear jewlery? Those who have tattoos? Drives a truck? Does this automatically make them a lesbian? I THINK NOT!

The line between the sexes is starting to fade away, and things are becoming more and more "unisex" whether we like it or not.

Remember, our "male" ancestors wore wigs, makeup, earrings, clothing that resembled a dress, etc. Does that make them gay as well?

If you don't like it, or don't want to do it, then don't do it! But at the same time, leave those of us who want to explore this area ALONE! We are not bothering you. If you see a man who has his nails painted, wears earrings, etc. and you don't like or agree with it, simply continue walking and leave them alone.

it really pisses me of when people come on forums and call people gay. not having a dig at anyone.

Another thing that don’t help right is on the subject of ear piercing etc.

people say if you have both ears pierced your Gay -- Wrong so Wrong

I have both done and I am not gay at all.

then you get people who say Left ear is straight right ear is Gay...

It’s a load of crap - its 21st century for Christ sake

You do what you like – it’s a free world – your body – you only can be happy once your happy doing what feels right to you

Men who paint their toes

Postby Toe » Thu Jun 29, 2006 12:36 am

I agree. I have painted my toes now and then. Sometimes color sometimes clear. It really protects the nails. I take really good care of my feet and nails. They are what carry me all my life. Hands and feet are important and I want to keep them as long as I can. They might as well look good and be healthy. :D

I dunno

Postby FarfFignuton » Sun Jul 09, 2006 5:41 am

I'm a male, and I'm straight. I just painted my nails about 3 minutes ago. I think that just because you're a man doesn't mean you have to conform to the stereotypical homophobic macho tough guy. I'd rather stay in touch with my feminine side. I just think it looks cool. I'd probably wear eyeliner too, but god damn Billy Joe Armstrong ruined that forever.
