Jamie has quite short hair so his earrings are very visible. When he first had his ears done he had few comments but not now everyone is familiar with him wearing studs in his ears.
Saturday we were at Jamie's Mum and Dads house for tea and Jamie's Mum got out some photos of Jamie when he was a child. Jamie looked really cute with curly hair, I can understand why his Mum wanted his hair to stay curly. His Mum explained that he had curly hair as a baby and it wasn't until he was about 5 that his hair started to grow straight so she decided to put his hair in rollers at night time to keep his hair curly. She did this until he was about 8 when she decided to try perming his hair so she bought a home perm kit and permed his hair. She showed me photos of Jamie having his first perm, Jamie looked happy in the photos wearing a towel round his neck and shoulders and an old PVC apron of his mums with a head full of pink perming rods. Jamie said he remembers that first perm as if it was yesterday he said it seemed to take for ever which of coarse perms do. His Mum said she only permed his hair at home a few times before she got a job at the village hairdressers and from then on he had it permed at the hairdressers which was a lot better, his mum even had some video of him being permed in the hairdressers when he was 12 which was hilarious to watch. To see Jamie sat in an old fashioned ladies hairdressers wearing a flowering pink gown having his perming curlers put in surrounded by middle aged women having a shampoo and set was the funniest thing I have ever seen. I asked Jamie whether he felt embarrassed and he said no because he had never known any different, he said having his hair permed was much better than having hair set in rollers every night. Jamie said that he had his perm every 8 weeks on Friday afternoon after school so some of the other customer new him very well so they would bring him cakes and biscuits to eat while he under the dryer, he said all in all he enjoyed having his hair permed. I asked whether he would have it done again and he said yes if it came back in fashion then he would not hesitate in having it done.

What do you think? I think you should ask him to have it done. Do you want him to?

I think Jamie should have a perm again, I have already asked him and he has agreed to grow his hair to a length that can permed. It should take about 6-8 weeks for his hair to get to a permable length. We were at the hairdressers last night, Jamie had his highlights done, I mentioned perming Jamie's hair to our hairdresser Sandra and she thought it was a great idea although she warned us have highlights and perms done soon after one another. So we will have to see how this works out because Jamie will be due for his highlights re-doing at round about the same time as his hair will be ready for perming.
I can't wait to see Jamie in those perming rods

Cool!! Please share the experience with us. Keep us filled in as time progresses the next few weeks. I think more guys should consider this! Do you agree? By the way about how old are you guys? Just trying to place the age group interested in this sort of thing. Also, my stylist said it needed to be 2.5-3 inches with pink and blue rods in order to hold the curl. How long is Jamie's hair now?

I think more guys should consider experimenting with their look rather than sticking to the same boring look they have always had. We are both 31 years old. Jamie's hair is about 1.5" - 2" long at the moment, our hairdresser Sandra said his hair would have to grow about 1 - 1.5" before she could successfully perm it. Sandra said she will probably use the pink perming rods which is the same as they used when he was a child.
Jamie says he is also quite looking forward to having a perm again after a 18 year break. He says it will be like reliving his childhood. Last night I joked with him saying, that if he really wants to relive his childhood then we should take him back to the village hairdressers where he last had it permed or I could call his Mother and ask if she has still got her perming rods.
Jamie's Mum called in this morning for a coffee and a chat so I told her that Jamie was going to grow his hair and then have it permed, she is delighted that Jamie is going back to his curly hair again. She told me that it was only few weeks ago that she was clearing out the attic and she found all the perming equipment from when she last permed Jamie's hair. I asked her whether she threw it all away, she said she kept the perming rods but the towels and aprons had to be thrown. I am going tease Jamie tonight and tell him that his mother has still got all her perming rods and she would love to perm his hair again, I'll tell him that his mum will get the perm kit all he needs to take is something to protect his clothes from the dripping of perm solution, we need some new towels and we could both do with new PVC apron so the old ones coould be used for his perm. He will have a fit, I hope I can keep my face straight.

See aren't you glad that you asked Jamie to do this? In your original post you said that you didn't think he would ever consider a perm again. Maybe he has been waiting for you to suggest this to him for a long time. Maybe he was afraid to bring this up to you because he wasn't sure how you felt about perms. I am in the same position, I don't know how to bring this up to my wife. She is the type that would say "whatever you want" or not really want to discuss it. Those reactions make a guy feel like the answer is no. This sure has got me thinking about the situation though. I think I want a perm, not to be feminine, but for a change. My hair is STICK STRAIGHT!

Louise, by the way, is your hair permed? Curly hair on women is hot too!! Are you into piercings as well? Tattoo's? If so where?

We had a good laugh last night when I told Jamie that his Mum wanted to do his perm but he soon realized that I was joking.
I am really suprised how receptive Jamie has been to the idea of being permed again, it took much longer for him agree to have his hair highlighted, I nagged him for about 2 weeks before he agreed to have it done. Getting him to have his ears pierced took even longer, when we first met Jamie would pick me up every lunch time from Claires Accessories where I work and take me out to lunch and every day I would ask him to come in and have his ears pierced. After about 3 months he finally agreed to go into work with me one saturday morning and have them done. Maybe it was the fear of the unknown that made him uncertain about his highlights and earrings which is not the case with the perm.
I do not have my hair permed, I have straight shoulder length hair with lowlights put through it.
I absolutely love earrings, I have my earlobes triple pierced and normally wear doubles on a daily basis as I said earlier I work in Claires so I pierce ears every day. I think earrings look great on everybody that's why I wanted Jamie to have a pair of studs. I am not into body piercing or tatoos though.
Guest, I think you need to talk to your wife tell her you want a new look and you think a curly look would be good subsequently you would like to have it permed. I know if I was your wife I would be impressed that you are pepared to sit through a perm to improve the way you look.

Thanks for the advice. Is sitting through a perm that bad.?How come your hair isn't permed? Was it ever, or will you consider it? I think that part of the reason I want to try a perm is because I LOVE curly hair on almost all women, therefore why wouldn't I like it myself. To me straight hair can be pretty boring. Also, do you have any suggestions on how tight to have it done or what rod size/color?

Perms On Men

Postby Louis » Mon Aug 28, 2006 2:52 am

I am a male in my 40's. I started perming my hair in my mid 20 (early 1980's) I have always loved the look, and even enjoy the process a little. My wife could care less. She refuses to Highlight her hair which I love and have requested for many years. She will get an occasional loose perm but not the tight curl I would like. I wish she took more interest in my hair and passion for hair. I get my hair highlihgted a few times a year and just started wearing it a little longer again. I do all my hair appoitments on my own. She will not participate in any way. Sometimes when I travel on business will go to a salon and request a wet set on perm rods. I usually tell them I want to try a curly look before actually doing a perm. I enjoy wearing it that way for a couple of days. I have enjoyed many great experiences getting my hair done (wet-set) the years. I wish she had the same interest. I have always wanted for both of us to go to a salon and both get wet-set in a very curly style.
