Postby C.G. » Mon Jun 18, 2012 9:32 pm

Would you change it?

If so,

allow prisoners to vote?

make people sit a general intelligence test?............................................ :?:

If under 18s are paying tax it seems reasonable to give them the vote. I don't know how much difference it would make because I suspect the majority are not interested in politics. It isn't perhaps that unexpected, since all major parties have been pursuing the same Thatcherite policies since the mid 1990s so what difference does it make? I'm a bit more optimistic that with the excellent Jon Cruddas involved in Labour policy making it might change. In a sense it doesn't matter if ultimately they are right or wrong, the electorate deserve a choice of political direction, otherwise there's no point in elections at all.

allow prisoners to vote?
A British obsession this and of course it plays well with The Daily Mail Tendency. I'm not that bothered and I suspect the majority of prisoner aren't either. On the other hand much of Europe falls in line.

make people sit a general intelligence test?............................................ :?:
Very tempting or maybe introduce a simple question like "do you read The Daily Mail or a News International paper?", but no of course not, we can't go down that road.

i definitely wouldnt lower the voting age, i know what my friends think about and ive heard there "political views", they might be my friends but i definitely dont wanna imagine what it would be like.

imo you should have to earn the right to vote, not be given it out indiscriminately.

would you lower the age? NO. Maybe raise it to 21. No soldiers under the age of 21 either.

allow prisoners to vote? Oh puleeeeeeeeeeeease. NO!

make people sit a general intelligence test?............................................ Can of worms not to be opened, IMO. If we required intelligence testing, we'd never have a Democrat [president] to be elected in the US.

Good topic. Good questions to ponder.

Illegal imigrants should be allowed to vote. After all, they have human rights. Giving illegals that privilege is the right thing to do.

Oh, my bad, they already have been voting.
o'bumma is a play on words, using the American slang "bummer" = an unfortunate situation. oh!...bummer! is spelled as o'bumma. This and similar plays on words can be found in numerous places throughout the internet.

I had been paying tax for four years and had done two years compulsory National Service before I was allowed to vote. (the voting age was 21 in those days).

Lower the age? I think it is fine where it is.

Allow prisoners to vote? No. It's all part of the consequences of their actions.

Take an intelligence test? Sort of. I do think people should be able to have a decent understanding of politics and be able to say why they have chosen one candidate over the other. Something that would prevent people from voting just because they can despite not really knowing anything about who they voted for.

Lower the age No

Prisoners - no they gave up their right when they broke the law

Intelligence test - just because a person is of low intelligence they still have a right to determine their own future and voting is one way. Also who would set the level and the criteria?

We have to engage young people in politics but I fear they can't be arsed. If you made a General Election like X Factor it might work or even had a system where you could text your vote.

allow prisoners to vote?
Not really bothered either way to be honest. Question is...where does their vote count? In the constituency of where the prison is or where the prisoner normally resides?

make people sit a general intelligence test?............................................ :?:
Absolutely.
Those who give up their freedoms for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both.

Men only and over the age of 30.
It all started going wrong when women got the vote.
