Aliens in films

Postby Winston Smith » Tue Jul 17, 2012 9:40 pm

Why are the nasty ones always reptilian or insectoid? And the "nice" ones always have large eyes, big heads and can smile?
Those who give up their freedoms for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both.

Humans of all cultures have similar ideas as to what makes a scary monster, Carl Sagan said of dragon legends that they are memories of the time of the dinosaurs passed down from the time when early humans were running about dodging getting scoffed... a sort of handy composite of all the salient points of the creatures to avoid I guess, the similarity to those same traits will never sit comfortably on the eye...

Incidentally since I have those distant dinosaur ancestors (chickens) in the garden it's interesting that they in turn will go mental at anything looking "snake" even though they've seen nothing of the sort in their 13 week lives so far.
Do it now...before it's too late.....

Interestingly though E.T. (Extraterrestrial) looked more like a tortoise to me, so was basically a friendly reptile. 8)

Aliens like in "Attack The Block" and "Critters" were furry but not that friendly!

Spielberg modelled the eyes of ET on Bambi. True dat.
