How to be more awake in the mornings

Postby LastTrainHome » Wed Jul 18, 2012 1:10 pm

I'm not a morning person, I never have been, but recently I'm really struggling to get out of bed and I'm really tired all day. I quite often find myself having an afternoon slump at work where I can barely keep my eyes open. I was the same when I was at university.

Take this morning for example, my alarm was set for 7am, I don't need to be up until 7:30am but I set it earlier so I can 'snooze' it and give myself time to wake up. Next thing I know, it was 8:15 and I had 30 minutes to get up, get ready and get to work. I'm just lucky I woke up when I did. Normally I can drag myself out of bed at 7:30am, but what happened this morning has happened more then once. I'm never late for work luckily, but sometimes it is pushing it a bit fine and it sets me up badly for the rest of the day as I don't feel organised.

I don't go to bed late, in fact last night I was so tired I went to bed at 9:30pm, so it's not like I'm not getting enough sleep. My partner does shift work and often goes out before me, I wake up when he goes then go back to sleep, which I don't think is helping. He also snores so I don't think I'm getting a full nights sleep which again is probably a contributing factor.

I used to work part-time (mornings) and would find myself falling asleep at home in the afternoons (i guess through boredom, and I didn't really have a routine as my shifts were constantly changing). When i started full-time (9-5) it really made a difference, as I had a routine, I knew what I was doing and I worked around it (plus I was starting an hour later then my last job so it meant a bit more time in bed) but now I seem to have gone back to the old way :(

What can I do, eat, drink to give myself more energy and keep myself going throughout the day. I do tend to snack a lot at work which I know isn't the best idea, but I try and eat plenty of fruit and veg and bring a 1l bottle of squash with me so I'm not dehydrated. I bring energy drinks with me to work sometimes but they're not cheap and it's not ideal, I'm 25, I shouldn't have to be relying on those to get me through the day!

I'd start by cutting out energy drinks. They're just gonna make you crash harder, not to mention how bad they are for you on other levels. Limit the caffeinated drinks too, but you shouldn't need to cut them out completely.

Eat plenty of berries, they are notoriously good for energy levels among other benefits. Nuts, seeds, beans, lentils and eggs are also known for boosting energy. Assess your overall diet, perhaps your tiredness is a sign that you aren't getting enough of something.

Keeping a routine will likely help too. Maybe it is worth staying in bed when your other half goes to work.

Exercise can also help with energy levels.

Get a job where you don't have to get up in the mornings. I dislike being "woken up" intensely - always have. I actually feel sick. Better to find a way of earning aliving where you can let your body come round naturally.

I like to sleep about eight hours. Any longer than eight hours and I am likely to have trouble waking up. I try to go to bed by 9:00 PM and wake up by 5:00 AM.

I don't think my diet is perfect and is definitely something that I can change. I don't get up when my other half goes to work, but we only live in a small flat and I'm a light sleeper so no matter how quiet he tries to be I tend to wake up anyway. I try and exercise when I can, I want to start going running but the weather isn't on my side at the moment :( but it is something I am going to start doing.

In my last job, before i started working mornings I was starting work at 3pm, and that really messed up my body. I'd much rather get up and go, I was knackered by the time I'd got to work in the last job and hadn't even done anything! Once I'm up I'm okay, but I struggle so much to actually get myself out of bed and I think that's what makes me more tired for the rest of the day. Funnily enough, probably being so paranoid about over sleeping again, I was waking up every 15-20 mins from about 5am this morning, and eventually got up about 6:45am.

I think this may be a problem, I probably am getting too much sleep. I've read somewhere before that we go through periods of deep sleep throughout the night and if you wake up mid-cycle, it can make you more tired then waking up at the end of the previous cycle (or something...I'm no expert!) Also I let myself sleep in at weekends, maybe I should just get up at the same time at the weekends to keep in a routine.

Have you tried earplugs? Personally they didn't work for me, but they might for you. As for the exercise, maybe you have a gym nearby that is pay per visit rather than needing a monthly or yearly fee paid.

In my last job, before i started working mornings I was starting work at 3pm,

I actually start work at 2pm most days. Weird at first but I find if I still get up around 7.30/8am then I can maintain a good routine and it allows me time to relax in the morning, do chores around the house and even pop into town for a couple hours.

Also I let myself sleep in at weekends, maybe I should just get up at the same time at the weekends to keep in a routine.

Maybe just try the one lie in at the weekend.

Thanks for your advice.

I'm not so keen on ear plugs as I'm worried I will sleep through my alarm. I prefer to do outdoor exercise and get some fresh air at the same time. I play tennis but again it's an outdoor sport. Hopefully the weather will sort itself out soon! Funnily enough today I've been a bit tired, but much better then the past few days. I have been busy though so maybe that's why.

When I can rely on the weather, I could actually walk to work. I'm only about 30 mins walk away, but I don't trust it enough not to rain half way through the day then have no way of getting home!

I think I just need to try and get myself in a better routine, and eat better. I normally just bring sandwiches for lunch, maybe I will start making salads and bringing that instead.

i have the same problem i sleep a lot i think we have vitamins or mineral deficiency due our bad eating habits.it is also due to air pollution (not enough oxygen ) i heared in japane they sell oxygen tubes for inhalation and they use it like energy drink to keep them awake during the day

Perhaps everyone has a habit in facing difficulty to get up in the morning at one stroke because of laziness. Therefore, in order to be more awake in the morning is to follow a suitable routine and not giving compromises at sleep and also not sleeping more too. Proper routine will definately help us to be more awake in the morning and also in starting, following a different routine is difficult but in few days again it becomes habit which means that our weak habit changes in strong and good habits.
