Girlfriends Dog is annoying me!

Postby bijinfinder » Thu Jun 14, 2012 8:55 am

I have been with my gf for 1 1/2 years. I love her like no other, but her little dog is annoying me. Sometimes I take the dog when she is at school or running errands and it is fine. I keep it outside with my big dog.

That would be annoying, sounds like she needs to discipline the dog more and I'm sure you know from having a dog yourself, dogs respond well to discipline (most of the time).

Perhaps you could set up a nice spot outside the bedroom for the dog to sleep. Tell your girlfriend that you don't want the dog sleeping on the bed with you at night, but that you have made a spot especially for her dog.

You could also try training the dog a little yourself. My fiance never really gave his dog any training, so I decided I would. The dog now sits and stays without any voices being raised, when he comes in house after being wet he knows which room to go to until he has been dried off. Most of this and more is done with hand gestures and at the start I used vocal commands with the gesture. Remember to reward the dog each time he does what he was instructed to do. More importantly get your girlfriend to do the same as you, so not to send the dog mixed messages. I showed my fiance the results I was getting and he now does the gestures too.

You could always try putting on those dog taming shows when the girlfriend is over too.
I like to tell people I have the heart of a small boy. Then I say it's in a jar on my desk.

I realize that I am jealous of my gf's dog. I am jealous that the dog gets more time than I do, that she plans her life around the dog. When we are talking or doing something the dog wants attention.

I sometimes wonder if small dogs are a substitue for human relationships. Much as some men become obsessed with pron, so do some women and men become obsessed with their dogs.

Ultimatum - you either sleep with the dog or me. I dislike the idea of dogs on beds, it is not sanitary.

That dog needs to learn it's place... I wouldn't tolerate yapping and messing in the house from mine (unless she's had an accident when I've been out) and certainly not sleeping on the bed. Your gf is over indulgent and now the dog thinks it's entitled to non stop attention.

Unfortunately in this sort of situation the one needing the "training" as such is the human element, the dog once shown that it's in its best interest to behave and be quiet will be fine. Not an easy job I think...
Do it now...before it's too late.....

What do you regard as most humane?

Animals can sense when they are in proximity to people that don't really like them. I think the dog is simply trying to get your gf back to paying it more attention, and keeping it away from you. Not that you're mean to it or anything like that, I'm not suggesting that at all. But it feels threatened, and wants the protection and affection it is used to from your gf. Conversely, you cannot be forced to like an animal that annoys you so. The animal needs more training.

My gf and I have talked, she has worked with her dog and disciplined it better. Normally I get along with the dog when she is not around and I am watching it while she is away. I will say that my gf has made an effort to improve the situation. The dog is much better behaved. I still struggle with an inside dog, but that is my problem and I will have to get use to it, because there are a lot of people with inside dogs. I live in the country and have room for my dog to wonder outside. Sometimes I feel that we force dogs into a human environment and expect them to follow human rules. They have instincts that can not or are hard to overcome.

True. Dogs are the sort that like to follow their noses. But they also like a bit of comfort and spoiling. If a dog is given the choice between a nice warm mattress with it's owners or a cold spot in the dirt under the porch.......they're gonna be in that mattress before you can say jack robinson. :D
