The worst compliment a guy can give

Hi all.

As you can see from my name, I don't intend to bring any false pretences. I am a male lifestyle journalist looking to write articles giving an insight into female standards, thoughts, desires etc when it comes to dating and relationships.

I want to set up a number of threads during my time here as a way of canvassing opinion about the opposite sex. What should they be doing, what shouldn't they be doing, how can they impress you, what do they do that annoys you? The usual thing.

My first question is what is the worst compliment a guy can give a woman? You know, the times when your husband/boyfriend thinks they are paying you a solid tribute and somehow manage to put their foot right in it.

If you could give me an idea of such a 'compliment' or something similar, along with an anecdote or a reason why it's such a misstep that'd be great. It would also be good if you could leave a first name and a rough location.

I don't think the compliment itself matters, more the way it's given.

It might be because I'm younger than most here (17), usually whenever I get compliments is generally from guys my age and a lot of the time the compliments just seem so...fake basically, it's like I know what the guy is interested in and he's just saying whatever he thinks I'd like to hear. And that usually annoys the hell out of me, its so difficult to find anyone worthwhile because of it, its like really hard to trust whatever any of them say.

I have absolutely no problem being appreciated for having curves. I have an average frame but I am definitely curvy. Maybe it comes from my own security that I am not fat and that I will not attract a man who specifically likes skinny girls, but I am still attractive. So when a man tells me that, I feel more secure that I am with a guy who is attracted to me because he likes how I look (and how I take care of myself), he doesn't like me DESPITE my figure.

That might be my answer as to a bad compliment. I can't think of the WORST, but I do recall a guy telling me "you're okay you know" and said something about my body, like it took him a while but now despite being not-skinny, I looked kinda good. And it came out nowhere. It was very odd.

I have heard of a guy friend try to compliment a girl who had managed to get up on this ledge. He said she looked like she had strong legs so its no surprise. She laughed with her girl friends because of how that sounded, and then he joked and said yeah "thunderthighs". I wanted to bury myself for standing next to him while put his foot in his mouth like a master.
