Kate you could have something fantastic, or you could be just about to lose a special friend. I don't know anything like enough to judge.
My only advice is that if you two do get together do it on one clear understanding, you will continue to be open and honest with each other - whatever it takes. It's the foundation of what you have and if you exchange that for a deal which says you will be faithful to each other then you will rapidly lose trust because one or both of you will start lying to preserve the "faithfullness".
Tell him that if he sleeps with someone else but tells you, you'll be upset, but forgive him. If he lies to you about it or tries to hide it, it will be the end.
If you don't think you can do that then don't sleep with him.

Oh Kate, you are in serious trouble. lol You know this guy inside and out. Just because you know all about his follies, doesn't make him a bad guy. Everybody has their issues, you just happen to know his. If you were with someone else they would have a list of issues to deal with too. No such thing as perfect. It sounds like you two are already heading down the romantic path for intimacy. Unfortunately, once you two become lovers, everything will change. Because you know so much about him, it will make things tense. However, he knows all about you too. He maybe thinking with the wrong head, but he does know you. Relationships are not easy. There will be some give and take on both sides. Good luck, your life just became complicated with your best friend. We all dream of being best freinds with our lover, maybe you have done it the right way after all.
