Thank you so much ladies for posting your side effects that you have endured while having the implant. I was going to schedule an appointment tomorrow gyn to get the implanon since my sister has it and seems to be doing ok, (but she's only had it 4months) I have 3 kiddos and am not ready to get my tubes tide. (not ready for that door to close yet) but i get pregnant very easily, even with other contraceptives. But me and hormones do not get along. Side effects from most birth controls that have hormones is weight gain. (mostly water retention, so you can diet and exercise all you want, it's not calories that's putting the weight on for the most part) i just stopped nursing my 11month old and still need to knock off 20 pounds from pregnancy. my main question is, "is there a birth control out there that has minimal side effects? that's not an iud?" I guess i can keep wishing, right? Again, thank you ladies for putting your stories up. You probably just saved my husband from having a very moody, over weight, wifey for 3 years =)

I am soo happy I found this! Thank you ladies. I've had the implant since feb and already i've put on 2 stone!! Since being weighed just before my implant was inserted and last week i've put on 2 stone. I also suffer from drastic mood swings. I cry at almost everything! The other day I was in the arcades and cried at a Marilyn Monroe 10p machine... My sex drive has halved and my boyfriend has told me that since getting the implant i've not wanted to go near him and anytime he tried to give me a kiss i stand there like a log and do nothing. After seeing everyone's complaints I've decided to make an appointment tomorrow to get it removed!

I had my implant fitted 12 weeks after having my daughter. In those 12 weeks I had lost the very little amount of pregnancy weight that I had gained. I know weigh as much as I did when I was 9mths pregnant and I've only had the implant 3months.I also now can't fit into my maternity jeans which I wore till labour due to being too tight on legs. I get very sore pains in my arm where the implant is fitted and awful stomach cramps and reflux problems. Also been getting pains in my head and literally no energy which doesn't make sense due to amount of sleep been getting.
I have talked to GP numerous times and have all advised I stick with it as it's very unusual to get side effects with the implant. This site made me realize I'm not mad and cannot wait to get it removed now.

well girls, after a lot of thought and reading through this board i am having my implant removed today!
my main reason for having it removed is the weight gain, i excersise 5 nights a week and eat healthily but i just cannnot seem to stop the weight going on nevermind coming off!
im now 5ft5 and 183lbs which is the heaviest ive ever been in my life! and i feel like i have no control over it what so ever.
Also, i have totally and utterly lost my sex drive... i am so lucky that i have a very understanding boyfriend that i have been with for 6 years. i love him to pieces but my skin crawls if he even hugs me :(! and trust me this is nothing to do with me not being attracted to him! the very thought of sex makes me cringe, this is not me at all! (doesnt this totally defeat the point?! no wonder noone gets pregnant on the implant, they dont have sex!)

im a little nervous to have it removed but im sure it will be worth it!
i just hope that i go back to normal asap!

i will post again and let you know how i get on :)

wish me luck! x :D

i am so please i found this site.

I have had this implant for almost 3years (due to come out this nov) i cant wait. When it was placed in '09 i was not told about any of the possible side effects, i done some research and decided that it was for me as i could have it removed at any time.. previously i had the combi pill since i was 16 (now almost 24) which had no side effects for me i was on that because i needed my periods regulated as i would have 1 period every 4-6 months. Anyways when it was inserted i started drastically putting on weight i went from a size 8-10 to size 16-18, i was mortified as my diet had not changed at all. i am constantly miserable to the point almost depressed, i am surprised my partner has put up with the mood swings. i am not an emotional person at all yet all i seem to do is get upset about silly little things, like an advert on tv! seriously what is wrong with me!! 2 years ago i got a dog which helped me lose a little weight as we go walkies twice a day, though i am still size 14-16 bottom and 16-18 top. my boobs occationally are quite sore and nibs tender, as for sex drive-- what sex drive!! i couldnt get enough before, now.. nothing. i always feel tired and often suffer from headaches- i suffer with migranes anyways so this is hell on its own.

i have not had a single period since having the implant, i am a little concerned about fertility afterall i cant see how using contraception for sooo long can not effect it.

It is really nice to be able to share my experience and read about yours too and i hope every person that reads these posts can have a little insight on what they have or about to put there body through.

I honestly don't believe the Implanon causes weight gain or prevents you from losing weight - Its simply a case of eating more calories than you burn off!.
I think some people find it easier to blame Implanon than accept that it's their eating/lifestyle habits that are the real problem.

Every person body is different, just because your one of the lucky ones doesn't mean that every one is the same! I was fine on the implanon for the first 16 months, although i gained about 12 kilos, now im getting major pain in my abdomen and even more weight gain.
the implanon has caused me to get constant ovarian cysts, and i have never been more exhausted!
My doctor doesn't know why the sudden change but i am on an antiinflamatory 24/7!
Am thinking of getting it removed very soon, though i cannot take the combined pill as i get migranes and it makes me very ill, does anyone know what else i could go on?

im sorry but see people like you really do my head in do you really think all thes lladies are not telling the truth dont be so bloddy silly there is pages and pages of woman who have never met each other who have the same story!!!! u dont just put on 3/4 stone on in a few weeks over nothing when your diet has not changed! so lucky you u were lucky but think before you talk u never know whats round the corner this thing can make u go from a lovely size to huge so dont talk too soon"!!!!

hi there
I've just had my implant out after 11 months of persevering with it (wish i knew about this site before i got it in as don't know anyone that has the implant!) I was on Microgynon since I was 16 (I was 22 when I got the implant in) with no problems until i started getting really bad migraines so was told to find alternative contraception and chose the implant. Getting it in wasn't too bad (hurt a little and really bad bruising after for about a week) but my period came on about 2-3 days after getting it in and I was on for about 3 weeks with very heavy bleeding off for 2-3 days then back on again so i went to the docs and got a tablet to take for a month to regulate my bleeding after i stopped taking it my periods were regular every month but i started to put on weight and my mood was really bad to the point that my partner and i were having really bad arguments to the point that we nearly called it a day! but we stuck with it and eventually we both decided that it was time to get it out. i went back on my old pill and on tues this week i got it out which was an ordeal my partner came with me and thought i was a wimp (no pain threshold at all) i got told that my arm would be numb and i wouldn't feel a thing but i felt everything! to be fair it did only last 5 mins and was really easy to remove but agony! Would not recommend this to anyone! will be sticking to the pill from now on! one question for everyone though how long do you keep the paper stitches on for as I never got told?

I am seriously considering having my implant removed.

I had it put in at 19 - I'm now 25 and on my second implant, and I realised recently that I've put on just under a stone per year since getting it!

At first I put the weight gain down to poor diet and lack of excercise - which without a doubt was contributing. But in the last year, I've totally changed my diet, and I now excercise 5-6 times per week. I tried Slim-fast, Weight Watchers, Slimming World, Orlistat - nothing shifted the extra lbs. In fact, it has consistently gone up, no matter what I do.

I've seen the doctor who has confirmed that it's definitely not a Thyroid problem, and the hospital have said that there's no chemical reason for the weight not shifting, and they're now talking about Gastric surgery! The implanon is the last thing I can think to change before agreeing to it....

Still NO period !!

Postby Sophie1993 » Tue Sep 18, 2012 1:37 pm

Hi Everyone :) I am quite worried about still not having a period after my contraceptive implant was removed on 6/08/2012 and its now 18/09/2012 so over a month now !! I have been having stomach aches / headaches etc on and off for two weeks now but still no signs of a period :( I took a pregnancy test two weeks ago and it was negative but I am using condoms with my partner and occasionally we have had un protected sex.. I am going to my doctor at the end of this month again if I STILL havent had my period.. Has anyone else been in a similiar boat ? Thanks :)

Hi

I had my implant 24/9/2010 and had it removed 18/9/2012 just yesterday, hurt a little bit to remove but nothing I couldnt handle,

I did experience some weight gain but prob only half a stone mood swings I had as well but all this was described by my nurse at the time, I did how ever not have a period for about a year then after that I bleed every couple of weeks for about a week so for me this method is not consistant and I wouldnt have it again,

I am going to be trying for a baby now, so watch out mood swings and I havent even got that in anymore lol lol

Hi everyone its been so helpful reading through all of your experiences. I had my implant put in 12 months ago. There have been a lot of changes in me since and it only occured to me about a month ago that it could be because of my implant. I wasn't talked through any of the side effects when i had it inserted, so it didn't really cross my mind that it could affect me so badly. Ive gained almost 2 stone in this time. I have been on a strict diet and exercising daily for 8 weeks and havnt had any weight loss at all. I have become very spotty which has really knocked my self esteem. I have experienced bad moodswings and am extremely ittitable which is ruining my relationship along with no interest in sex. I have been feeling depressed and very anxious, I have never experienced any mental health problems before the implant. I am getting mine out in 3 weeks and can't wait to start getting back to normal, and start rebuilding my relationship :D does anyone know how long it should take until I begin to see a difference in my mod? And will my weightloss immediatly speed up or be slow for a while after the removal? Xxxxx

.i have had my implanon in for 3 years im actually going to have it removed next week and have another one inserted. yes there are some side effects i had the first 6-7 months of having it inserted. tender nipples, head aches and sometimes cramps which i never used to have, but after a while it went away. i did gain weight too but after a check up at the doctor i made sure i started eating right and do some sort of exercise (which i NEVER did before). also, i stopped having a period all together which was great! lol i think that if you have some side effects you shouldnt give up. your body takes time to adjust to it. i figure, id rather deal with the slight head aches and work out then have to have a child before i am ready.
