Re: Implanon - side effects

I got Implanon Dec 24 2009. first six months or so fine, no periods, pain, pimples. By June, I was bleeding once a month, 10 months later, I was experiencing constant spotting, worst period pains I've ever experienced, pimples everywhere. I tried taking Premarin for a week, but the shortness of breath freaked me out.
Now trying to decide whether the fact that the implant stops me from getting pregnant outweighs the side effects.

i am coming to the last year of my first implant. i get severe migraines on the pill and so my Doctor suggested the implant. for the first two years it was great. my periods were longer but less painful and lighter. now i am having 3 period's a month and have extremely tender breasts. i am going to my doctor to get it take out as the pain is crippling every time. i have lost nearly 3 stone since starting on the implant which i suppose is the only upside of it. my partner is being very patient but i know he is frustrated about it. i don't know now what contraception to use as i can't go back on the pill. has anyone had a similar experience? suggestions? it's not worth the consistant bleeding to get the bar back in and the migraines from the pill are too much to take. it is so hard to find a contraceptive that suits and doesn't effect your day to day life. i am one of the unfortunate ones who is having a very hard time on the bar but i got 2 good years out of it.

Re: Implanon - side effects

Hi, I've got the implanon, this is the 3rd one I've had. I was put on dianette at 14 for acne and then continued to use dianette as a contraception from the age of 17. Obviously they advise you shouldn't be on it for more than 7 years, so about 7 and a half / 8 years I stopped taking them and had the implanon inserted.
The 1st one I had no bleeding at all apart from light bleeding (for 4 weeks) after 2 and a half years as a sign of it coming to it's expiration. (keeping in mind while on pill, regular periods, severe cramps and headaches)
The 2nd implant was the same, as the 1st including expiration. I had no cramps etc also.
After having the second one out, I wanted to have a break, not to sound silly, but mid twenties i didn't know my own cycle, i'd simply been on the pill from 14 and hadn't had a break.
I had a break for 3 months and low and behold - regular periods, 3 months on trot, 30th each month. I was really pleased esp after so many years. So, here i am 3rd implanon in (aged 30!) and after a year i have small periods, sometimes heavy. I'm thinking of having it taken out.

I can't complain about my experience with the implanon implant even after having 3 of them. The putting in and taking out is easy, no pain, the only thing that hurts is the anaesthetic, it stings for what, 20 seconds when going in arm.

No complaints here. All positive. :D

I first had the implanon in 2005 when i was 20 and it was fantastic. i had no periods and suffered no side affects that i can remember. I worked at a stables so didn't put any weight on. However after about 2 and a hlf years it started wearing off and i started getting heavy periods so got it removed. Then for a few months i had the worst period pains ever.

I got the implanon again in January this year and since then have gained weight which i blamed on becoming 'comfortable' in my new relationship, however whatever exercise i do i just keep gaining weight. Also my skin has become very greasy and spotty. I don't know if this could be from the implanon or not. I am thinking of getting it removed and giving my body a rest for a while.

I'm thinking of having the implant, how many actually get problems? I can't take a combine pill as I may or may not have the breast cancer gene and so have no wish to take oestrogen. At the moment I use no hormones, I have awful skin at the best of times and dreadful periods- mum threatend casulty last time and I'm not sure if I didn't faint. Any ideas?

Hi there,
I had the implanon inserted last week, and i have bee feeling sick every night this week, i am never actually sick, just feel it. Kind of nausea, has anyone else experienced this? I also feel as although I am putting on weight, but i dunno if this is just due to me worrying about these symptoms! I have also been feeling really tired, is this another symptom?
can someone please tell me if they had this sick feeling, and if so, how long does it last for!
Please help, i'm quite worried that this is being caused by something else!

Hi Everyone

I am new on here and in fact never been on any forums before. However I am horrified to read how many awful problems some women are having with the implanon. I had my 1st one put in about 5 years ago. At first I was delighted, no periods, no weight gain, no headaches etc like some people have developed. However I do have a dreadful side effect that i am beginning to suspect is from the implanon. Whenever i feel arousal (sorry to be explicit) or reach climax with my partner i get excruciating stomach cramps! i also have no sex drive which i never linked to this blinking implanon until now........I suggested to my GP that implanon could be the problem and he dismissed it, I recently went to a gynacologist who also didnt know of my problem and suggested i may opt to have it removed.

Having read all the comments I am having the blasted thing out as soon as possible, I am sad I didnt look at this forum earlier to potentially save myself from years of miserable pain and my other half having to suffer too :(

I wont dismiss the implanon off hand as I am sure some people have had success with it. However I am very disapointed that my GP and seemingly many others offer this as a miracle contraception without really knowing the potential short and long term side effects.

Anyway sorry to blab on it was nice to finally be able to vent it out a bit. I will update this with my progress after its out :)

Re: Implanon - side effects

Postby libs » Thu Nov 04, 2010 6:30 am

I have just been researching about implanon side effects and I am not happy at what I'm reading. I can't understand why they have not listed the more serious side effects in the leaflet, only the most common ones.

I have only had my implant in for about 5 months and it's all starting to hit home for me now. I had it put in for the long-term side of thing's because our family is now complete and with 2 very young children I was scared I might miss a pill, well... my sex drive is non-existant which is causing a rift between me and my partner(i think we've had sex 5 times since having it in), my weight is up and down and hard to control because my appetite has gone up. I had no bleeding up until about 2 weeks ago, it's very light but I am still bleeding now and this is making me feel tired all the time and quite crampy but the biggest change, and I've only just realised, is that I have been feeling very detached from my children :(. I am a stay at home mum with my boys who are 11 months and 2yrs 6months, but before I had the implant, me and my eldest had so much fun, everyday was a new adventure but now I'd rather the kids played quietly by themselfs in the sitting room while I stay in the kitchen most of the day, only doing for them what they need at the time they need it, all the fun bit's inbetween seem to have gone, i get snappy with them at times too and only realise it was wrong afterwards.

I'm not sure why this is, I love my family and feel it when I look at them but it's like the interaction side is dwindling, I really don't know weither to have it out or not, could this get worse?

Re: Implanon - side effects

Postby Implanon101 » Sat Nov 06, 2010 5:59 am

I would just like to share how implanon has effected me! Granted I believe that every method effects people differently! I' am 20 years old, I got implanon inserted in July 2009. I bleed for 3 months straight, I have had 3 periods since then that have seemed to be normal. Around January 2010 I started getting really bad headaches and my breasts became very sore, months later they were literally ROCK solid, It started hurting to do simple things as taking a shower or walking because of the water hitting my chest or the movement! I went to my doctors and they had no explanation for any of this. Since I have had the implanon in I went from a size 1 to a size 7 in less then a year(20lbs) , granted I could of used some weight! Recently I have had problems with severe pain in the arm that the implant is in. I have decided to get the implanon taken out, due to a recent trip to the doctors and them finding a lump in my breast that I strongly believe is related to the implanon. Like I said not every method is right for everyone. Its a trial and error thing. If your reading this because your looking to try it, please do it could be different for you. I know serveral other girls who have implanon and they love it. Just not the right method for me!

hiya i've been reading all your posts and am so confused, i have had the implant in for about 3 months, as soon as it was inserted my periods stopped, i haven't had any mood swings,my sex drive has got higher, but i am putting weight on, i've been told i have pcos and suffered really really bad with periods and chronic pain since i was 11, i'm 29 soon, i have tried allsorts of contraception, infact i think all of them, i fell pregnant on the injection and couldn't get on with any of the pills, i had the mirina coil to help with the periods and pain (was told it should help with pcos aswell) i was in agony for a year, being told it needed time to settle, my periods were all over the place so i was told to try the implant, but just recently i am getting alot of stomach pains, and feeling uncomfortable, i'm going to see my doctor today to see what is going on.

i've always been fobbed of with my problems and am getting really sick of it, i even got told i needn't worry about the pcos, it won't get any worse, it doesn't matter that for the last 5 yrs i've had excess hairgrowth (i can grow a beard better than my boyfriend) but hey why should i worry about that!!!!!!!
