I think it is important to remember certain things with any contraceptive pill.

1) Each pill will affect every woman differently, depending on their own body's chemistry. What causes minimal or no side effects for one woman, may be "the pill from hell" for another.

2) Cilest is considered to be an oestrogenic pill (the progestogen Norgestimate isn't one to cause many progestogenic effects such as acne, hair loss, low libido), therefore if you are getting these problems, you will need a pill that uses a different progestogen, or lower oestrogen (less than 30mcg) such as Mercilon.

3) You need to give any combined pill AT LEAST 3 cycles before you decide whether it suits you. I would suggest 5 or 6 cycles, because then you can really tell if you're getting any benefits from it, because the first 3 cycles are really just the settling-in period.

4) Cilest is approved in the USA as an acne treatment (called Ortho-Cyclen) and is good for that, but if you have moderate to severe acne, try Dianette or Yasmin.

5) If a pill doesn't suit you, change it! Don't waste your life feeling rubbish.

To the man who has written that Cilest has ruined his marriage and that his wife is crying constantly since the birth of their 2nd child - could it be something like post-natal depression? The combined pill should regulate hormones and help minimise moods, but if theire's an underlying cause, that should be sorted out.

And weight gain isn't really down to pills. I know this will seem harsh, but actually the low dosage of modern pills really cannot cause weight gain. You can get water retention due to the oestrogen content, but the actual effect on lipids is minimal. It is more likely the increase in hunger to be cause the increase in pounds (and I speak as a woman who has gained weight on the pill!!).

Here's a website to help you if you're concerned about pill choices:

Hello readers!

First of all, I have been so relieved to have come onto the site and to have read the effect that Cilest has had on other women and that I am not alone! I am 19 years old and I have been taking Cilest for 4 months. I have just finished my period and I have made the decision to stop taking this form of birth control, not to become pregnant, but due to the fact that this pill has had an awful effect on me. I know that everyone is different, but from reading other posts, I have noticed the same problem occurring. At first, I didn't notice anything had changed (only because I had been taking Ortho Tri Cyclen for a month before taking Cilest and it made me CRAZY!) and I felt so much more relaxed on this form on birth control. Then, as time went on I started to cry and lot more and I tended to blow little things out of proportion. My period was regular and wasn't too heavy which was nice but I had irrational thoughts. I hated myself and blamed everything on myself and lashed out on my partner several times. I became violent and suicidal. I was definitely suffering from depression. These problems occurred normally before my period or after. During my period, I felt so much better, relaxed and not as anxious or depressed. I have noticed that when taking Cilest, my sleeping patterns were awful. I would wake up in the night feeling extremely nauseous, therefore leaving it difficult to wake up in the morning.

Since not taking the pill, I feel back to my old self again. I am still a little emotional, but I am happier. For now, I am not thinking about taking any form of birth control that are not condoms.
I hope this has helped someone out there who is suffering from depression because of this pill and helps them realise that it is not their fault.

Just wanted to post to say THANK flip i'm not the only one! Having tried 4 different types of pill since October 2010; non of which have suited me, I tried Cilest but it is just awful! I've taken it for only 1 month but have gained over a stone, despite keeping up my exercise. I have found that having never had a sweet tooth I now have one the size of Asia, and am not satisfied until i've had some thing sweet. My skin is also terrible spots not just on my face but my chest and back too. The hair on my head is dull and falls out, where as hair any where else on my body grows 20x quicker than it did before. My moods are horrific, i'm either crying or shouting. I have pains all month which feel like period pains. I'm tried, feel sicky, dizzy, higher blood pressure...it's been hell! One very noticable point was completely loosing my sex drive, which as well as being very odd (considering my usually which is through the roof) but also slightly defeats the object of taking the ruddy thing in the first place! So finally having taken 3 out of the next packet and noticing a 1lb a day going on the scales and returned my pills to the doctors and stomped home.

4 days later the withdrawl bleed isn't nice...it's very heavy with lots of clots which is making me a bit dizzy but I already feel better and have dropped 4lbs. I feel like someone has released a pressure cap.

In summary - Cilest works if you don't want to get pregnant only and this is because you turn into a fat, spotty yeti like beast with an attitude problem, and no man in their right mind wants to come near you, incase you either eat them or rip their heads off!

I'm so glad I found this I have been on cilest for three years and though I'm only twenty have zero, absolutely no sex drive apart from the week I'm off the pill! It crossed my mind before that cilest was the reason for this problem, now I'm sure and am changing my pill asap! fingers crossed a new one helps...

Honestly Cilest is NOT worth it. I've been on it about a year, I kept having trouble emotionally but not too bad and didn't connect the symptoms to Cilest. However a couple of months ago I ran two packs together and got constant bleeding, and my emotions got worse the longer I took it. I had EXTREME anxiety including full-blown panic attacks, depression, horrible uncontrollable thoughts and emotions, I felt like I was constantly terrified something bad was about to happen. i had this for about three weeks in particular and the last week was just so extreme and non-stop I told my boyfriend that i wasn't coping and if he thought I should see a doctor. My boyfriend told me his sister had been like this on the Pill and had to stop taking it, and reminded me that the last time I felt this way was 2 years ago on Microgynon, which I stopped taking to see if it was the cause, and got better right away!

Reading the reviews of similiar people I feel so relieved I am not alone. As for me, I am luckily on my pill-free week, it's my third day off it and today has been the day i feel better. There's no accounting for it, I just feel this heavy cloud totally lifting from me, as if my mind is reverting back to normal, no more 'waves' of complete terror over nothing.

Never taking this again. If you do take it, please remember this in future so that if you get these symptoms, you realise it's Cileste. I dread to think what would have happened if I hadn't realised it was the Pill.

Hi everyone,

I have already posted about my experiences with the implant on other topics on this website. I thought I would have a look at what people have been saying about cilest as I was on it before the implant. I think I was on cilest from age 18 to age almost 25 so 6/7 years. Since I started it when I was a teenager and so long ago I can’t really remember what I felt like before it if that makes sense. Over the years I have had numerous huge fights with my mum and I just put it down to being a teenager and a mum/daughter relationship but now I wonder if the pill contributed to my moodiness and anger during these fights?
I don’t really think the pill has made me put on weight because I am lighter now than I was when I was younger. I do think though that as the years have gone on my period pain has gotten worse – as far as I can remember anyway! I have over the past year/2 years felt more irrational, anxious, depressed, mood swings but as I had been on the pill for so long I never thought it could be that. Has anyone else been on the pill for years and then experienced side effects?
I was on the implant for 7/8 months and would not recommend it as it made me totally angry – total rages – then floods of tears. Just awful! I got it out only a few days ago and I feel a lot better. I am now on nothing after all these stories I don’t think I want to put anything in my body anymore!
Good luck to everyone

Re: Cilest

Postby Guest » Wed Aug 24, 2011 10:59 am

Hi
I am 30 and have been on cilest for nearly 12 years (i was first on mircogyn and felt sick an dsore legs). I have felt much better on cilest less moody and more calm(less crying etc) periods fine could almost predict to the hour when my bleed would start and i often run packets together often 3 or 4 in a row sometimes get spotting if i do 4 in a row. Also on advise from the doctor if i miss up to 3 pills in a pack (not in a row) i don't need to worry - just carry on with next pack with no 7 day break.

Now I am thinking of coming off as i want to start a family in the near future.(i am 31 this year)

It has made me think about my pill the last year or so my pill has been less predictable for the time my bleed will start. (for 10 years it was at 7pm on friday) now it could be wednesday - sat at any time.

Also I keep waking up feeling like my right arm is inflated it feels very swollen (but doesn't look swollen) also sometimes tingly arms i put this down to maybe lying on it in night but is happening more so now not sure.

I have had no sex drive for most of the time i have been on the pill but just ignored it!!!

i exercise enough and eat sensible but cant shift this 2 stone i have put on (not exessive overweight but can never get below 10, 1/2 stone, before i was on pill i was under 10 stone) i just put this down to lifestyle but i have really tried to lose it and no shift!!!!

Always feel bloated and have water retention - tried changing to wheat free diet which helps but still not great. I also get very constipated at times and other times very loose and i am sure the pill doesn't help.

Also about 5 years ago i went to the doctor feeling dizzy he wasn't very helpful and just said see if it gets better!!! i was less confident and didn't follow it up but now feel this could be an effect of the pill.

I keep getting lower back and adomen pains which have been related to water infections which conincied with being stressed but also dont want to rule out the pills effects on this.

The plus sides are i have enjoyed 12 years of not worrying about periods just having light ones for say 3-5 days instead of 7 heavy days. I can choose when i have periods. and less PMT! And also despite being a bit forgetful with talking it had no pregnancies with the pill.

So I will go and see my doctor and talk about the effects i have I may just use condoms from now on as i have read that it can take ages for periods to return which will not be good for trying for a baby. I have also read a lot of negative reviews about coming off the pill and how long it takes for periods to return to normal.

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents here too. I was on Yasmin for nearly five years and although it improved my acne I had awful mood swings and a fluctuating sex drive. I've just started on Cilest and although my acne is bad again (I'm hoping that once I settle into the new pill this will clear up) my sex drive has increased and I have never been happier! Just wanted to give some positive feedback because Cilest seemed to be getting such bad reviews. I think everyone is so different that each type of pill is going to react so differently to each of us.

I've been on cilest for 4 months now. I don't actually need a contraceptive as my husband has had a vasectomy but my hormones were all over the place and I generally felt awful most of the time. I've been put back on it to regulate my periods and help with the hormones. I feel that it has helped and I feel a lot better however I have noticed a strange side effect which I'm wondering if is connected to cilest.
I have dreadful rhinitis. It's like suffering from hay-fever. I'm not allergic to anything nor ever had hay-fever. I searched _ and apparently non-allergic rhinitis can be caused by a hormone change from the contraceptive pill. So before going back to the doc I just wondered if anyone else had experienced this

Hi have you found anything more on this connection? I have had really bad sinus problems and chronic rhinitis and a chronic cough for 5 months now, and the time coincides with the exact time that the doctor switched me from Yasmin to Cilest. I've felt like i am just going to be ill forever because i am always blowing my nose and coughing. I thought it could be the new pill but the doctor said its probably just a coincidence.

It was just a link I found when I googled rhinitis - that it could be brought on with come oral contraceptives. I am now off Cilest and onto a minipill(Cerazette) as I was getting the most awful migraines on Cilest too. I've always suffered from hormonal migraines and was conscious that this could be a problem when I went back on the pill. Unfortunately for me it was too much of a problem.

The change to the minipill has been a revelation though. Always, always, always my migraines would last exactly 4 days and nothing NOTHING would ever shift them. When I went back to the doctor with an absolute stinker (day 2) she prescribed Cerazette. I went to the pharmacy on leaving the doctor's and took my first pill immediately. Two hours later, it was gone. I've been on it over a month now and so far so good. The hormone levels remain constant and I feel normal for the first time in years.

Interestingly, I watched a programme about medicine recently. They have been using progesteron to help stroke victims. They showed a brain scan of a stroke victim with one side of the brain totally white due to lack of blood. With the use of progesteron compared to none at all, a much greater percentage of the brain came back into use. Progesteron is a hormone found in both males and females at similar levels - it is produced in the brain, not in any of the sex organs. Very, very interesting!

I have taken cileste for about 2 and a half years now and never thought I had any problem with it. There's been no weight gain, no spots, no awful periods, no depressing moods....however I have had no sex drive, despite having an amazing boyfriend of almost 3 years who I think is gorgeous! It never even occurred to me that my low libido could be due to cileste....makes so much sense as I'm always "in the mood" when I'm on the break...not ideal! This forum is a godsend! Think I'll be making a trip to the doctors to change!

Also, just as more proof that everyone reacts differently...my friend had to come off cileste because it made her so emotional, she used to cry all the time. She changed to something different and is now happy as Larry!

Hello,

Reading your replies makes me realise i should go back to the docs. I have been on Cilest for 6 months just over and i am incredibly angry, i have had no motivation and no spark. I have lost my sex drive altogether. On the bonus i have lost a stone in weight, however i find myself not wanting to do anything, and not smiling. I have few teary days that i cant control, but most of all i have had this angriness and numbness to anything going on around me. No concentration and almost like im watching life go by. I have started getting bad spots, which i didnt really suffer from before, and periods are defo getting heavier and more painfull once again. As in the last year i also tried the injection (progestrone) and that made me just cry and bleed all the time. So i thought the fact i wasn't crying so much was good! Only i realise im just full of angriness! I cant control it, im destroying the people around me cause i seem to be either angry or just numb to everything, even the things i love.

Cilest

Postby Tarah » Fri May 04, 2012 9:50 am

Hi Guys, I am 19 and i have just come on Cilest, its the first pill i've ever been on.
I started to take it yesterday and I think ive just become extremly paranoid cause i feel i am getting like a tingling in my leg which i now think its because of a blood clot. Could this even happen? I am a big of a hypochondriac so it would really give me peace of mind if someone told me this couldnt even happen in a matter of a day and I will know im just paranoid.

Thanks Guys hope to get a reply. x
