Actually, I also do it regularly, as do most of the pillion passengers I know. I don't consider it ideal, but I don't think it is phenomenally dangerous either. It would be exceedingly difficult to fall off. To anyone who doesn't believe this, consider that the rider's centre of gravity acts downwards through the bike. Getting off - whilst awake - requires some considerable effort against gravity, an amount of effort that most people would not be inclined to make in their sleep. Pillion passengers do not actively do anything to keep themselves on the bike - physics takes care of that for them. New or nervous riders sometimes think that they need to hold on, but this is a little like learner swimmers using an inflatable ring, when their natural buoyancy is just as effective as everyone else's.
