i think it depends on the person. My best friend only had a 2 hour labor she said it was not that bad me on the other hand had a 39 hour labor with my son and 19 hours with my daughter and they were both horble. I cant even explain how bad it was.

I read somewhere that after you give birth a special hormone is relased into your brain to help you forget the pain of childbirth. Seemingly the pain is so bad that many women, if they could really remember how bad it was, would never have anymore children. This is natures way of ensuring that women continue to have babies and thus further the human race.
This theory kinda makes sense to me because so many women that Ive spoken to dont seem that fussed about the pain. They all seem to say things like, "well it wasnt so bad" or "yeah it stings a bit but then at the end of it all you have a baby!!" Me thinks they are forgetting some of the minor details, like he hours screaming in agony while a small person is being pushed out of you.

how painful is pregnancy?

Postby meggymummy » Mon Oct 31, 2005 8:14 am

I had my first child without any pain relief at home in 3hrs. This wasn't intentional - I just didn't manage to get to the hospital. The pain was bad - but only when you are having a contraction. I think because I wasn't drugged my body just took over and I knew just what to do. I felt more comfortable in a kneeling position, gripping onto the headboard. I think lying flat on your back in a hospital bed in an unfamiliar environment is a recipe for a lot more pain and a longer labour!

It's bloody murder during a contraction but when the baby is born the pain stops instantly. Like banging your head against a brick wall, great when it stops.

It hurts. there is no point in lying, labour/birth hurts.

One thing i did notice tho was that just at the point that your screaming that you've changed your mind, and that actually, you can't do this, you just can. i don't know how but you just can cope.

I'm a few days off doing it again for the second time, and i know what is coming. i know i don't remember the pain exactly, but i know that with those first few contractions the memory will come flooding back.

The way i look at it is this, it does hurt, but even if it's a long labour, it's only a short period of time in terms of your life. And there really isn't anything as special as your children, so it just kind of makes up for it.

Lets put it this way, when being wheeled down to the ward, an hour and a half after giving birth to my daughter i turned to my husband and said "you know what? i could do that again tomorrow" i ddin't mean literally, but that what had happened was so special, it makes it worth while.

I have done it 3 times now and each time was easier. My 1st labour was 16 and a half hours long. I had diamorphine and gas and air. Can't remember nothing baout the birth except I was singing when I was supposed to be pushing. I can't remember him being born, or the first couple of hours after.

With my 2nd I was in labour for 42 mins. No time for any pain relief at all. I almost had her down the toilet LOL. I felt every bit of pain, and the only way I can describe it is that someone has a blowtorch up there on your cervix! That was the crowning. I could handle the contractions perfectly fine. All I did was sty calm and took each contraction as it came and never thought about what was ahead of me.

My 3rd! Oh dear, that was only 13 days ago! Was in hospital already ready to be induced as I was 15 days over. At 2:50am I got my 1st contraction. It bloody hurt! Thing is with that labour, the contractions went on forever! As soon as one ended another one began. I was sure he was gonna come real quick! When they checked I was only 5cms :( I asked for pethadine, but by the time she came back with it (less than 10 mins later) I was ready to push, so got none :( Only thing I had was gas and air. It's good stuff that is :D I was only pushing for 9 mins and felt no burning pain that time. Theres only the beginning of the push that hurt, so the longer you push the better :P

I would go through it all again.

I think that i was not that bad, the labor itself because of the pain meds. I think the worst thing for me was the aftermath of healing and your body trying to go back to the way that it was. I was a in labor for 18 hours and pushed only for 10 minutes, but it is different for everyone!! Good Luck!

If it was that bad, no one would ever have babies and the human race would become extinct. Yes it has it's downs, but in the end you have a beautiful mini version of yourself that makes it all worth it.
