Son has no Ambition

I am a working mother while hubbie is a stay at home Dad ever since I had twins (boy and girl)who are now twelve.DH doesnot want to return to paid job and probably will not get decent white collar job because of lack of suitable qualifications.
Problem is my daughter is good in studies and takes interest in extracurricular activities also while my son takes little interest in studies.While my daughter wants to be a Doctor my son wants to follow his father's footsteps and wants to become a stay at home spouse only.He takes serious interest in learning cooking,sewing and usual tricks of housekeeping.He thinks graduate degree is not neceassry to become a stay at home parent.His lack of interest in studies and earning a professional degree worries me.It seems he has lost ambition.How to motivate him towards serious studies and interest in pursuing a career?

Well Mum, I am not sure how to respond to your problem. I grew up in a family where us men define ourselves by our willingness, ability, and determination to be providers to our families. If your husband is a stay at home father and is happy to be that way, then that is what your son sees as acceptable. The lack of ambition does not really surprise me. This may be a time when you and your spouse should sit down and discus between yourselves how you both can be better role models for your son (as well as your daughter). I have 4 children (3 girls, 1 boy) with one more due in december (also a son). My philosophy is very old fashioned: as a man, I am the example by which my children will judge other men (in the case of my daughters) and one to be followed by my son. My suggestion is for your husband to reenter the workforce or attend school in some capacity to give him a greater chance of being a financially contributing member of your household. Instill in your son the importance of hard work (be it skilled trade, military, or college educated), working towards his own independence, and relying on himself. I would not count on (if I were him) meeting the right kind of woman who is willing to take on someone who at the end of the day is an anchor rather than an asset in the future.
