It all depends on what machine you have and what's already fitted.

If you have spare memory slots you can usually just add more. No free slots and you'll have to scrap what's there and fit bigger capacity devices.

Most suppliers have guides based on your PC model that you can check. Try http://www.crucial.com/uk/

It would be handy if you have the manual for your motherboard and processor, because RAM differs in a number of ways other than size, for example number of pins and type e.g. SDRAM, DDR see:

http://www.computermemoryupgrade.net/ty ... -uses.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIMM

A typical motherboard would look something like this and the RAM sockets are the brown ones towards the top left-hand side.

You also need to read the manual in order to find out the maximum amount of RAM your system will support. If you have lost the manual you might be able to find a copy, or at least the information you require, using Google

OR you could do it the easy way, sod manuals, and all that...

crucial memory scanner
http://www.crucial.com/uk/?gclid=CPX52v ... _google_uk

just run the scan it will tell you exactly what you have in your system and exactly what you need. Doesnt mean you have to buy it from crucial but at least you will know if its ddr or ddr2, what speed it is etc etc..

The most difficult part of adding more ram is making sure you purchase the right stuff in the first place!

Fitting ram is probably the easiest thing you can do in terms of computer upgrades, you literally just push it into place.

I recommend a program called "Cpu-Z" to find what kind of memory you have. It will say if it is DDR1/2/3 and what speed it is running at.

You better buy a 2GB RAM beacause if you buy a 1GB RAM it may be incompatible with the other and your pc will work even slower than before.
The question is not who is gonna let me, the question is who is gonna stop me!

You'll have to explain that one to me. Provided it's the right type of RAM and your system can support it there should be no problem if you have a spare slot, you just get the total so adding a second 1GB will give you 2GB in total. It's worth checking the prices though and if the 2 GB card is not much more expensive than the 1GB you might as well go for it.

One caution about installing the RAM yourself: Be sure you are grounded when you do so, or you could damage the motherboard by releasing static electricity. You can ground yourself by keeping your wrist or some other part of your body (no, not that part :) ) firmly placed against the power supply while installing the RAM.

If you have lost your manuals, you can also find out much of the information you need regarding upgrading your RAM from the computer manufacturer's web page. I bet if you post the MFG and the complete model number from the back or bottom of the computer, someone here could tell you the answer to many of the questions posed in earlier posts.

Good luck.

Do it only if you are an expert. There is a lot involved in changing a RAM. You need to get one that works with your system configuration. Anything else will not work and can crash your machine.

I am very glad that I find your regular post here. Which seems to be very important and it made good time pass for me. I will always give a nice thrust look in to you from my bookmark feed. I don't actually comment and don't like to spend time in typing the comment. But here I have to do this because this deserves a good like.

Best thing is to do as one of the other posts said and look at one of the memory manufactures like crucial, you can normally put in your PC details and it will tell you what type of memory and configuration you can have.

On older PC’s you had to put the memory in in pairs, but if you’ve already got 1Gb it’s unlikely you have an old PC so shouldn’t have to do that
