His mother is an author Phyllis Theroux, his father is an international law lawyer specializing in 3 nations.

His mother worked for the Washington Post as a columnist and helped make M. Scott Peck's novel "The Road Less Traveled" a best seller, she was even mentioned in his obit.

His mother remarried in her 60's and lives in Ashland, VA. His stepfather is very involved with the Ashland Theater group there.

His mother's full name is Phyllis Grissim Theroux Phillips. She was born to a large somewhat wealthy Catholic family and went to Catholic School (now lapsed I think) & I believe she has 6 siblings.

One of her brothers is a writer who knew Hunter S. Thompson & the Mitchell Brothers and is married to a therapist (who is also an author). Her brother had a column for a long time in a local Marin Country small paper.

He is related on his father's side to the famous Theroux's. Paul Theroux - famous travel writer who had an infamous feud with VS Naipaul. Feud seems to be over at this point. Theroux accused Naipaul of sexism I believe (rightly so).

Paul Theroux is married and has been for a long time to his current wife. Paul Theroux's sons are Louis & Marcel. Louis Theroux is extremely famous in the UK as a documentary film maker. He got his start with Michael Moore.

Marcel is a screenwriter mostly in the UK. Both Marcel & Louis were raised by their mother (dunno if it's the same mother) in the UK, Marcel was born in Uganda & Louis was born in Singapore.

Justin Theroux's grandmother, father & brothers (Alex, Paul & Eugene - Eugene Theroux is JT's father) are in a photograph in the Smithsonian Museum.

I don't think Phyllis dated anyone till her children were grown up after her divorce from Eugene. She started dating her current husband (#2) at about age 61.

She also worked for the NYT & has several books out.
